Matt and I had that same problem. We had a registry for "People who need a registry to purchase a proper wedding gift" (i.e. the Great Aunts and the like) and an Amazon list for fun stuff that people who were not adverse to purchasing non traditional wedding gifts could peruse.
The first one we populated with a set of good china, some small-ish kitchen stuff (towels, cool measuring things, dry goods canisters, a new coffee maker) and a couple bed things...sheets, blankets, etc. The second one may or may not have had the complete run of Bab5 except season 2, which we already had.
I agree, it's tough to think of what to put on when you have pretty much two established households. You could always designate a charity to contribute to if you like, I've heard of that.
