Christmas is always a frustrating ordeal. Favoring all holidays that lead to the giving of gifts to those he loves and cherishes, Jinki is never one to pass up the more Western holiday. Unfortunately, his band mates aren't as spirited.
“C'mon, guys, it's a little tree, just help me decorate it!” Jinki whines, trying to pout and guilt the four other guys lazing about the apartment to help him feel less ridiculous about standing in the living room. All alone. With a miniature Christmas tree and a great length of a flashy array of colored lights tangled about his feet.
No one makes a move towards him. Jonghyun is on his laptop, probably reading yet another fan fiction about himself. Minho is tapping furiously at the buttons on his game controller and grumbling obscenities. Kibum is thumbing through some fashion catalog. The only one who doesn't look busy and has actually spared him a glance is Taemin, with his barely finished essay, still untyped despite it's due date in less than a week.
“I'll help, Jinki,” he offers up once he catches the desperate stare.
Jinki smiles gratefully. “Thank you, Taemin,” he says, all too loudly, “For helping me. I'll make sure to get you the most presents.”
Kibum's eyes snap up from his magazine, but only so he can 'tsk' at Jinki and mutter about not being “bribed so easily.”
“So, what are we doing exactly?” Taemin asks, kneeling down beside his leader and taking in the mess of decorations.
“Well,” Jinki starts, motioning widely at the display of trinkets he just spent a good part of his pocket money on, “We need to decorate the tree with all of .. this.”
Taemin raises a fine eyebrow at him. “Will it all fit?” The little three foot tall tree doesn't look like it stands a chance.
“Of course!” Jinki exclaims, eyes bright.
With a shrug, Taemin starts to gather some of the delicate ornaments. “It doesn't hurt to try.”
Jinki grins and reaches out to ruffle the teen's hair. “That's the spirit!”
Just as they begin to untwist and unwind the lights, Jonghyun closes his laptop and stretches out on the floor to watch with mild curiosity.
“Why go through all of this trouble?” he asks absently, chin resting on the palm of his hands. “Just buy us presents and get it over with.”
“That ruins the whole idea of it,” Jinki says, tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth as he tries to connect the lights.
“How so?”
Jinki pauses to think, then shrugs. “It just does.”
“Sounds like a waste of time,” Jonghyun comments while dragging his Mac onto the floor and rebooting it, “But, y'know, some of the music isn't too bad.” And in no time, Christmas tunes are drifting from the speakers of his computer.
Jinki hums along, catches a glass snowflake just before it hits the ground after slipping from Taemin's fingers, and bobs along to the beat.
Shortly after, Minho tosses his game to the side and slides down to the floor. He eyes Jinki, who's still working at the lights. Without speaking, he takes the lights from the older man's hands. Jinki watches as the rapper begins twisting some of the bulbs.
“Wow!” Jinki gapes as Minho manages to get the lights working in no time, despite the struggle he'd been having for a good fifteen minutes.
“Here,” Minho says, handing them back.
Jinki smiles. “Thanks, Minho.”
Jonghyun croons along to the music in broken English in the background while Minho shares a crinkly eyed smile with the leader.
Feeling left out, Kibum sets his magazine aside in a huff. “What are you guys doing?” he asks, refusing to leave his comfortable chair, but peering nosily over Minho's shoulder.
“Just finishing with the tree,” Taemin says happily, “Just need to find the angel to go on top.”
“Isn't it supposed to be a star on top?” Kibum asks, crossing his arms.
Taemin flips his bangs from his eyes. “I don't know, Jinki wants an angel.”
“It is Jinki's tree,” Kibum says, then adds, “Y'know, I really want some sugar cookies now.”
“Oh, can you make those?” Jonghyun asks, looking up at him with wide eyes.
Kibum sticks his lips out. “Of course I can. I just need the ingredients - but I'm not going out in the cold.”
Jonghyun reaches forward and pokes Jinki's thigh. “Hey, go to the grocery store.”
“Why?”
“For sugar cookies!”
Taemin's attention is immediately attracted. “Oh, yeah, Jinki, let's go buy the ingredients so Kibum will make cookies for us!”
Jinki curls into himself as the frigid air outside hits him. Beside him, Taemin bounces along without a care in the world. Of course walking to the store would be his idea, the kid is like a walking space heater. Lips twitching, threatening to form a smile, Jinki considers this observation. A walking space heater, hm.
Taemin squeaks when an arm is looped around his waist and tugs him until his hip bumps into his leader's. He blinks up at Jinki, questioning, but the other man continues to just stare straight forward. Taemin can tell he's trying to hide a smile, so he narrows his eyes and pokes Jinki's chubby cheek.
“Jinki, you aren't trying to make a move on me, are you?”
“Of course not,” Jinki replies, not skipping a beat, “You're just warm, is all.”
Taemin smiles deviously. “Are you cold?”
“Yes, very.”
“Good.” Taemin leans forward to press a chaste kiss on the singer's cheek. He preens when he sees the immediate flush wash over Jinki's face. “Warm, now?”
Jinki clears his throat, eyes still pinned to the space in front of him. “Very much, thank you.”
Despite trying to hold it in, Taemin can't help the laughter that bubbles up. “Jinki, you look ridiculous. Just like earlier, trying to get those lights untangled.”
“You saw that?” Jinki winces.
“Don't worry, I think it's cute.”
Their hips bump together and Jinki's face only turns a deeper shade of red. It's just the cold, right.
The trip to get ingredients for cookies turns into a nightmare for Jinki's card. Taemin piles on the goodies until Jinki thinks his arms just might break under all of the weight in the basket. But he can't say no. His smile just grows wider and wider; whether driven by joy at the sight of Taemin dancing around the aisles of the store or insanity at the sheer amount the load of groceries is going to cost is questionable.
“Oh, I guess we're having a Christmas party, huh?” Taemin comments cheerfully while swinging two of the lighter bags on his arms.
Jinki peers over the bundle in his own arms. “I guess so .. “
Taemin chuckles, cute but at the same time slightly frightening. It's the perfect mix to have Jinki cooing.
When they enter their apartment, the place is a bustle of activity. As soon as Taemin exclaims that they're having a party, the weight of the grocery bag's are almost instantly lifted from Jinki as Jonghyun and Minho ravage through the goodies. Kibum snorts, takes the necessary items for his cookies, and calls on his way to the kitchen “You're a push over.” Jinki doesn't have to hear his name to know Kibum's comment is directed at him. He just smiles and revels in the warmth of his band mates - no, his friends' company.
