Did you have a different-than-usual word count in mind for this, since it's half the month? Or are we still aiming for under 2,500 words (is that even still the recommended max?)

I didn't have a word count in mind. I've noticed lately that even given the opportunity to submit 4,000 words people are still keeping it under 1,000.
Unless the host states a word count, or we suddenly grow to 20 active writers in a month, let's call the max cap at 6k. Most paying or publishing submission contests cap short stories between 5k-6k words.
The ultimate decision lies with the host, though and I just happen be the host this month. I grant thee up to six thousand words.

I'm leaving for St. Lucia on Wednesday for 5 nights :)
Maybe the 88 degree, 80% chance of rain weather will inspire me!

Verily, I doth accept this most generous allowance of words.
