Last night I watched the 16th episode of Smallville's final season: Scion.
Scion means descendant or heir. Smallville taught me a new word!
Warning: Picture heavy!
Lois Lane demonstrates JAZZ HANDS FOR SMALLVILLE FANS!!!
For about half of the episode I was very bored. There were moments I enjoyed, but for the most part I wondered why Alexander's personality had completely changed, why I didn't believe that Tess was desperate for a mentor for Alexander and why the Smallville writers were so uninspired by their own final season that they continued to rehash stuff that had already happened on the show in previous seasons and/or previous episodes this season.
Meanwhile, my viewing companion
Chatchien was enjoying herself. She was feeling nostalgia, gliding through, enjoying the flight, and sad to think that Smallville would soon be gone.
I was so jealous. What happened to my low expectations?! What happened to turning off my brain? Why wasn't it working? I was just... MEH. Apathy. I felt afraid that soon Smallville wouldn't even be able to pass my sister's test. "If everyone and everything blew up would you care?"
...
...
...
What I called "boring, uninspired rehashing" Chat was calling "echos of the past", "foreshadowing" and "post-shadowing." She talked about the circle being unending. She said, "I want the circle to be unending. I want it to bring me back around to the first episodes when it was fresh and exciting."
I liked that idea. I liked the idea of things coming full circle. My brain was still in protest over the very bad writing and being picky. But I thought about it. I tried to loosen things up a bit and loose made me think of JAZZ! I thought that maybe the writers were riffing on all the previous 9 seasons AND the comic books. Comic book jazz! No rules... who says stories have to be linear?! Who says past and future can't commingle in ways that make no sense?! Smallville Jazz! A little fake Lex here... a dash of season 3 there... mix in some universe hopping! A bit of season 7... let's have a random bloody hideout from season 9... a bit of Clois! Let's throw a few people into the phantom zone, hey throw in some fanfic too while you're at it! Let's draw random movie titles out of a hat! Ice it over with some Kent family dynamic... Let's jazz up some comic book characters so that they are virtually unrecognizable! SMALLVILLE JAZZ!!! It made me want to re-watch season 10. I enjoyed the rest of the episode so much more after that.
Things I liked:
1. Tess/Clark chemistry
Tess and Clark have a Martha/Jonathan scene at the beginning of the episode! LOL! It would have been totally fun if Tess hadn't kept on calling Conner an experiment.
2. Alexander Conner/Tractor <3
3. He's a CLEX BABY!!!!!!!!!!
Lois: Are you trying to tell me that Conner is the genetic love child of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor?
Clark: Heh, you don't have to say it like that...
Clark liked it when she said it like that. LOL!
4. Conner is HOT for Lois!
I thought when I first watched it that Conner had a foot fetish...
Butt maybe not.
5. Kent family! I loved the pic of them shown during the episode and I love what Clark had to say about them near the end of the episode. He's learned to appreciate his parents several times on the show now... but I enjoy it every time.
6. Schmoopy Clois!
Lois is so touched by Clark saying she makes him feel normal. <3
Kiss!
7. Lois' research
8. Sneaky Lois - There wasn't a good screencap. :( Lois looked so cute!
9. Superhero Conner
10. Conner goes to school! This part choked me up a bit.
11. Pretty Clark! (Always and forever.)
12. Lex Luthor's grave
13. DARKSEID!!!
14. The preview for next week's next month's episode.

What I didn't like:
I didn't buy Tess' desperation. Tess/Lionel wasn't nearly as good as in Luthor and Beacon. Meh. Connor getting so hot for Lois that he kidnaps her, tosses her around and tries to get it on with her was seriously creepy and unresolved in the end. I didn't appreciate the nostalgia at first... all the callbacks just seemed tired. It's one thing to film scenes that are almost exactly like scenes form previous seasons/episodes if you TOP the scenes you are copying. But if the new scene is LESS INTERESTING than the scene you're recalling? TIRED.
BUT in Jazz Music when you throw in something from another song, you don't have to top it... you're just adding favor and nostalgic joy for those paying attention enough to notice. :D
Here's to Smallville Jazz!
Hope this works for me... and/or the writing gets better.
My experience of Fortune is perfectly expressed by this video... LOL!

I laughed a lot but disliked the episode. On the bright side whenever I watch season 4 and the "so much for my happy ending" plays for Chloe it won't be so sad/annoying. She got her happy ending! *sigh* I guess. Unless her new name is Refre G. Ratorstuffin.
Thanks to tvscreencaps.com for the screencaps! Toast screencap thanks to Homeofthenutty.com. Thanks to Puzzle of Boredom @ tumbler for naming the featured WHOOSH! gif, "jazzhands for smallville fans" & thanks to onebreath for creating the gif. Finally thanks to Chat for being my SV Jazz inspiration. LOL!
