Either the pacing of this season is really uneven or the fact that I've read through the entire Song of Ice and Fire series is hurting my enjoyment of the show. Either way I'm pretty much meh when I hear the opening music and that makes me sad.
I've been looking forward to Arya's travels with the Hound ever since I read it in the book. I enjoyed the opening scene between them. Arya smiled her first smile in what seems like forever when she realized that the Hound was going to ransom her to her mother and Robb. They played really hopeful happy music at the end of the scene too. Ah the landscape shots. Just perfect. I love that the Hound mentioned saving Sansa to Arya. The Stark family is so fractured. I love any moments that remind me of the happy times in episode one when the family was all together at Winterfell. The Hound is a second son. He tells Arya about how his older brother is much scarier than him.
The title characters are a group of sell swords. In the book we learn that they are supposedly made up of second sons, men who for one reason or another were disowned by their families or, because the first son inherits everything, thought they could make a better fortune as a sell sword. We don't get all this information in the episode and maybe we don't get all this info when we first meet them in the book, but that's my favorite thing about them. Dany's court scenes in her tent are... there's a sameness to them all. YAWN. Dany does a great job holding her own against the Titan's Bastard. I love her use of the line from the book, "I am only a young girl..." That gave me a thrill. The look she gave the Titan's Bastard after he slapped Missandei on the ass was wonderful. "Kill him first, Ser Barristan." "With pleasure." LOL!
Stannis is the second son to beat all second sons. I guess he's got the middle child syndrome. "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" LOL! His sulking tickles me. Poor Gendry arrives at Dragonstone. I love that Stannis still uses Davos as his moral compass. Is Stannis a sociopath? LOL! Stannis doesn't listen to Davos' advice though, he's totally turned to the Red God. I really miss the religious aspect of Davos' return from the sea. It makes me sad that he didn't have his vision of the Mother on the show. I guess I understand why they cut it but it's a huge part of his character for me. I still hope Shireen will save Gendry and Davos will smuggle them both away. I have to say, as a Arya/Gendry shipper I am NOT happy with Melisandre deflowering Gendry. GRR! I'm just glad she didn't conceive a demon shadow thing with him. The leach on Gendry's penis was very silly. Maybe the penis leach is the one intended for Joffrey. LOL! But I did enjoy the lead in to Gendry's blood transfusion. It reminded me of Hansel and Gretel where the witch seems so nice and fattens them up only to eat them for dinner. Oh I almost forgot! Davos can read! <3 <3 <3
I've been dreading the Tyrion x Sansa wedding all season. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Olenna really enjoyed all the miserable, humiliated Lannisters. A Sansa x Loras wedding would have been much more joyous I'm sure. The Tyrells would have been so smug about outwitting the Lannisters. Sansa knelt for Tyrion which is a deviation from the book. I LOVED Tyrion threatening Joffrey. Cersei crushing Margaery's attempt to charm her was stomach churning. Total book!Cersei. Subtle as a sledgehammer. If only she could manage a little subtlety. Loras' attempt to chat with Cersei was also crushed though not as brutally. LOL! Tyrion did not bed Sansa and Shae was glad of it. What a mess. I wonder how long it will take Tywin to find out from the servants that Tyrion is not being obedient. Poor Tyrion. Second Lannister Son.
Dany x Daario! Oh my ovaries! <3 <3 <3 Bring on the soft core porn!
Sam and Gilly are so sweet together. Randall Tarly. What a horrible man. Sam is NOT a second son but he's been treated as one because he's so gentle and doesn't meet his father's approval. THE HEART TREE. It had a pained man's face. I wonder if they are going to dispense with Cold Hands and just have the Bloodraven drive the plot forward in the form of large murders of crows. That would be interesting. Well, I knew something was going to happen so I covered my eyes. That white walker showed up. I don't know if they are after Gilly's baby in the books but... that was creepy. I hope they didn't really leave that Dragonglass dagger in the snow. Sam the Slayer is born!
Well next week looks action packed. There will be sword fights. That's fun. Seems that Jon Snow will have some tough decisions to make. There will be another wedding. Robb continues to plan his attack on Casterly Rock. Bran's plot looks like it's going to finally get interesting. Looked like Talisa was at Edmure's wedding. Eek!
