The Rains of Castamere - Game of Thrones 3x09

Well. I cried a lot.

I knew I would. Catelyn. Ug. I wasn't as upset as when I first read it of course but I was shaking and crying and pounding things with my fists and saying NO! a lot. Tragedy. Cat was so fierce. Anyways... I didn't really want to see her ruin her face but... she went mad in the books. Why the change? The massacre was oddly staged IMO. Robb was wandering around a lot. Cat was under a table. There was no Great Jon Umber. Ah well. I guess I just thought the massacre part of the wedding should have gone much faster, no announcements just music, door closes, BAM. I also thought in the book that the transition from Party to Massacre was more... interesting because it highlights the similarities between a very loud party and a battle. I just imagined there being an overlap between party and massacre and Catelyn is the only person in the Stark/Tully party who notices right away. The room seemed emptier than I remember. I'm re-reading all the Catelyn Stark chapters while I mourn this month so I'll see if I'm misremembering when I reach the end. I'm happy for D&D. I remember from several interviews that they hoped to reach the Red Wedding from the very beginning. You made it guys!

I giggled at Mary Frey correcting BIG DADDY FREY about her name.

Oh I love the fast and furious way all the Starks gobbled down their food when they arrived at the Twins. The protection of guest right or whatever. CURSED BE ALL THE FREYS. Except Mary. And the Frey women who were making eyes at the Blackfish. And that kid from the book that was squire to Robb and wanted to stay with Robb. And Roslin. But all the rest... CURSED. Speaking of Roslin... I love that Cat cried and looked so proud when she saw Edmure getting married. So lovely. Roslin is so cute.

I was never much of a Robb/Talisa fan. I really don't know why they changed the story from the way it was in the books frankly. Hot sex? I'm puzzled. Talisa's story didn't really add anything interesting and it didn't go anywhere. Oona Chaplin is wonderful. I wish should could have had a better role in the series. She could have been a part of the Dornish storyline. She would have made a FANTASTIC Sand Snake. What a waste. That whole story line just seemed forced to me and took away from Robb being a badass war strategist and took away from Catelyn being... well... onscreen at all. I'm sad about the way Robb and Talisa died but... the lameness of their storyline took away from the tragedy for me. Frey's comments on their relationship rang more true than all the forced true love speeches between them during the past two seasons.

Bring on the massacre of the FREYS!

RICKON! What a cutie. The parting of Bran and Rickon was quite a tearjerker. I adore any Stark Family crumbs that get tossed my way so Bran and Rickon's excitement and joy about Jon being alive was wonderful to see. Bran WARGED! That was fantastic. The sound effect that goes with the warging is so creepy and fun. Bran saved Jon. I was sad for Ygritte when Jon deserted the Wildlings but Jon really doesn't belong with them. I wanted Jon to get mysteriously shot with an arrow (Ygritte's maybe?) the way he does in the book. Kit Harrington was so wet and beautiful and ... beautiful. <3 <3 <3 I'm slowly falling for him.

"We're not Southerners!" You tell Osha, Rickon. I love what has become of Osha's character on the show. She's much more present and interesting than in the books. So I'm glad that there was an actual goodbye between Bran and Osha and Rickon. I hope Rickon and Osha continue to have screentime on the show. It would be fun to see, ahead of the new books, what's been going on with Rickon and Osha. I won't get my hopes up too high on that.

Dany's storyline was good, it was just difficult to be interested in it with the Red Wedding coming to a climax. My heart breaks for Jorah and ... as tedious as Dany's plot was in the books at times, it felt more like she EARNED her place. I'm sure next season there will be plenty of starving and plagues and boring sitting on pillows. I just felt that Dany had really earned a liaison with Daario in the books. On the show... taking over the East seems like a breeze! I know the show doesn't have much time.

Poor Arya. She seriously needs therapy now and she's not going to get any. I look forward to her continued travels with the Hound but... it's so sad.

Looking ahead It will be fun to see Brienne in King's Landing and I hope there's a confrontation with Loras. I'm actually looking forward to the Jaime/Cersei reunion. Wait. I just remembered the Jaime/Cersei reunion in the book. Maybe the show will change it. *gags* :( :( :(

A Jaime/Tyrion scene would be nice. Wait... :( :( :(

Things are going to get much worse before they get better. Why am I watching this show again. Periodically I would stop reading and wonder the same thing about the books so... they must be doing something right.

Now that season 3 is coming to a close, I think having read the books has hampered my ability to enjoy this season. I'll have to re-watch the series and see if... it's any better without my anticipation of the visual representation of my reading. One more episode to go and then the LONG WAIT. Maybe the She Wolves of Winterfell will come out while I'm waiting. *crosses fingers*

the rains of castamere, game of thrones, thinky thoughts, got season 3
