Giving up.

One of my tasks for this week was to make a monster-sized chart of the basic plot-line of Beth/Story1. I taped some thin card together and spread out the resulting sheet on the coffee table. Got my pencil and marker and some freshly buttered fruit toast, and set to work. And I did it! I worked out the years where the major events would be ( Read more... )

I definitely understand this feeling so, so much. My trilogy has always given me trouble, because I struggled with aspects of the world building. I ended up realizing that I needed to embrace the fact the setting was really our planet, just Twenty Minutes Into the Future, and do the necessary world building etc to make that seem reasonable and plausible.

Not to mention I had to rethink the plot for the first book, too. Like I'm glad I've written all of those old drafts, but I think the versions I'm working on now (on the weekends) are going to be the real deal ones. And I feel good about that. :)

It's sometimes discouraging, because it seems so MUCH, you know? But last night I sat down and did some work on it, and despite not having the direction I had with Beth, it's lot more intriguing, and that, I like. Unfortunately, the notes and drafts I have for it are from NaNo and are very scattered, so I don't know how much help they'll be! But they're a start, and so they make the process a little less daunting.

Yes, exactly. I received some wonderful feedback on my first 50 pages of my draft for Seize the Day. But it was painful and hard to receive at the same time, too, because he basically told me I needed to think things through a little bit further. So I let it sit on the back burner for a while. I figured my brain would solve the problem on its own. ;)

And yes, having previous drafts and notes to glean information from is always good. :) I have a lot of that for a lot of projects I have -- hell, one of my Idol entries this mini-season was based off the kernel of an idea I kept stored in my brain for over a year.

I never had an a-ha moment like this, but I wonder if this is why all my real world stories failed and yet Adrift made it through. I hated the hard work aspect of research and it could've easily put me off, but in the end I know it was worth it.
