The way it is delivered is crucial too. It doesn't have to be hard core and blunt, I know some folks that deliver it that way and it makes it a bigger pill to swallow. It's easier to take "I'm worried about you, I think you might be drinking more than normal" than it is "I think your killing yourself because you are an alcoholic". Aren't both honest if you think the person is drinking too much and you are worried about their health?
If they are good friends you won't have lost them.

100% agree with that. Honesty is really just a policy - the best policy is completely subjective and based upon whatever the situation is.

BUT that does not apply if you have been wronged in some way. Then you should definitely express your feelings. But do it delicately especially if it's me. hehe :o)
The delicate delivery can be challenging when you emotions are involved though.
