As a human sciences researcher, I'm intrigued. Do you use Western (American) policies and procedures or has the University developed something local?
Oh, and my answer re: the Uni's liability is, depends on how foreseeable the risk of getting shot is... Which would in turn depend on the content and context of the study...
I think the university incident is a clear indicator of being in Afghanistan, although I wouldn't have suspected them to be so organized as to propose that situation legally. I feel like it's kind of unregulated over here, meaning that they wouldn't think that far in advance for such an incident.
that traffic scene was scary. . .were they carrying the guns as if they were going to use them, or was it like, "Oh, I just happened to be carrying this gun. . ."
It's debatable as to the likelihood of seeing similar in the US. Coming from Texas, I've seen a few things in this part of the world that remind me of my childhood :p
Well, if an Afghan shot an American for conducting research, it's the American who would be going after the uni for liability issues.
As for the traffic/gun thing, they weren't pointing them at the car or anything, but they obviously picked them up from under teh seat of the car (or wherever) so it wasn't like they were just holding them anyway.
Ah. . .sorry, I was thinking of Afghans dealing with each other. Good thing they think of that with Americans, though. . .I'm sure they have to! (although I wish they valued life that way with each other. . .)
It's scary to think of people keeping AK 47s with them under their car seat :/
Nah, aside from a couple adjunct professors, we're all expats. In order to teach at the uni, you have to have graduated from a western uni. We have a few (3-4) non-westerners who did their grad work in the US/UK/Aus/etc. but pretty much all western faculty.
As for guns under seats... I've been told by the students that probably 60-70% of the people do have guns in their cars....
Amusing anecdotes. Unfortunately I have nothing much to comment about it, except thanks for sharing! Certainly does put some perspective on the "only in England/Britain" incidents.
