approximately 8 troubleshooting hours ago i made the mistake of telling windows to update itself. I selected the "custom" update option, butit apperently doesn't do anything. now, after 8 hard hours over 2 days and less one copy of service pack 2, I can check my email again.

For reasons listed above I figured it would at least tell me the general nature of what it was going to put on.
The reason it took so long is because appwiz wouldn't do it, $NtServicePackUninstall$ was nonexistent, and the most interesting part was that the system restore turned autoupdate back on (this comp hasn't been on the net in almost a year, and it was on back then, so shoot me).
