I remember Arthur's Seat as being quite easy to climb as a child. You must have really found the difficult path.

As for the leather kilt, kinda cool - much better than my tartan one.

Climbing is always easier when you are young with a lower centre of gravity and bones that bounce rather than break. I found a breakdown of the paths at http://www.geowalks.demon.co.uk/iarthurwalks.html - I went on the "adventurous" purple route. Of course, if I had realised there were easier options, I'd have been on those like a shot.
