In batterer intervention we talk endlessly about Beliefs that empower hurtful choices, what one gets out of them, and Alternatives in which one can feel equally (or, ideally, more) invested. This cannot help have an impact on the thinking of facilitators re: their own lives. To wit ( Read more... )

I don't think I've thought of them as having the right to punish me, but have always invited them to confront me. I see what you're saying, though, about the double-standard. This is in fact a question I have asked guys in group. I like the idea of remembering my areas of weakness, and wondering if those I'm mentally deriding have strengths in those areas. It resonates with the idea that this current path is likely to require of me an unaccustomed humility. Doesn't help for those that I actually don't see as having strenghths in those areas either, who also deserve my respect, but I think it will be good for me to think in terms of seeking out the admirable traits of those I'm inclined to judge ( ... )
