the evolution of digital communication means a lot of things. one of these things is that we become comfortable expressing ourselves through type, and proceed to have important conversations with it. not conversations that are intended to be important, but trivial conversations that assume significance because of how unremarkable they are. this ( Read more... )

It's an odd thing, this evolution of technology. Lots of complications, both good and bad. What a phenomenon you've put your finger on.

My packrat tendencies extend to conversations too. Just another thing to obsess over. I recently read over some IM chats from middle school that I saved. Most are less than meaningful, but I can't bring myself to delete them, even if I haven't talked to that person in years or the jokes aren't funny anymore. I love to look back over FB Wall-to-Walls, which is the same sort of deal.

Having them there is a reassurance that the relationship happened. I think everyone wants to make tangible the intangible.
