Hai bb! This was interesting to read, especially now that I intend to watch XF. You said so much, with out revealing many details, but the thing is, the details don't really matter. What matters is their relationship, and how much they need each other when times get tough. Its interesting to see how they have different coping mechanisms, Scully's science, and Mulder's breaking the rules, but in the end they are just means to the same end - to be able to stay together. Lovely work bb!

Ha ha, I love that you already understand them so well and you've only seen one episode of the show. That's quite amazing. I think you'll really enjoy their journey if you already have this small grasp of them.
*blushes* Its one ep and a whack of picspams/metas/whatevers. That and in many ways Scully IS me. The science versus religion question, the stubbornness/independence, and other things. So its easier to "get" someone, when you already know them in away, I guess.
I think a lot of people identify with Scully because she has so many conflicts to grasp on to. Some people really identify with the scientific nature of her character. As for me, I really identify with her religious struggles. I believe in God, for the most part, but it's a very shaky faith, more of a leaning board than a firm belief. I LOVE HER. I enjoy your insights a lot ♥
Damn, that was intense! I went through everything so fast that often the plot and the feelings would get lost. Thanks for helping me take a step back and see the epicness of X-Files and get insights into the characters.
Also: Does it make me a bad person if I cannot take Bill Scully seriously because every time I look at him I see Vince McVicar the pig farmer hit man? I wish I could get the intensity of those scenes but I spend the whole time freaking out about the evil guy in the room.
He he, thanks girl! When/if you're done with the series, I would definitely recommend a rewatch sometime in the near future. You can pace yourself and really delve into the characters now that you already know what's going to happen.

LMAO I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AGO. Now it's really weird to me. You're not a bad person ♥
Finished Monday because of MLK Day (yay civil rights...and for other reasons).
Dude, what were they doing killing my Gunmen a couple episodes before the finale?! :(
Not sure what to think of last episode (glad they recapped the entire plot for me, I'd forgotten some stuff; it was so great to see Gibson again although I'm pretty sure he got less adorable after his brain surgery, but overall it was kind of... Like the end of that sentence. You were expecting a word there. And I know I should accept that as artistic and awesome and fitting in with "the overall themes of the series"-or something-, but I really wanted something more concrete. Although the last shot was really nice.)
And those were my confusing parenthetical thoughts.
I was going to get all srs bisnis but HOLY SHIT GIRL HOW DID YOU WRITE SUCH AN AWESOME OPENING PARAGRAPH AFTER THAT FUCKING AWESOME BANNER FROM GETHSEMANE. HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO STAY SERIOUS WHEN YOU DO CRAZY THINGS LIKE THAT, HUH? HUH? EXPLAIN THAT TO ME. I’ll try to calm down now.
To be honest, I feel that the only thing that kept Mulder’s sanity was his knowledge that he had to save Scully. His need for her is more apparent in this arc than in any other.
This is extremely well put. I feel like it would help me a lot if the episodes from cancer arc were fresher in my mind. I’ve only seen these episodes once and it was a while ago. But the most memorable aspect of all these episodes is Mulder’s complete single-minded determination to find a cure and save Scully. He goes on this mission as if it’s the last thing he’s planning on doing in his life (which is sort of how Scully is feeling, too).
In essence, this arc brings the show to its very core: a story about two platonic lovers struggling with ideas of faith and

OMG YOU'RE FREAKING OUT. BUT OMG ISN'T MY GETHSEMANE BANNER WONDERFUL?

It's the one thing I take away from this arc too. I love how early cancer arc is more about Scully and later cancer arc is about them and mainly Mulder's guilt. It's also kind of heartbreaking to me to imagine what Mulder would be like without Scully. Would he be suicidal? Would he give up his mission? I dunno. But from what we can see here, he's lost.
The way you so smoothly use words to concisely get such profound points across truly baffles me. (<--- huge

Ultimately, her obligation to Mulder won because it more effectively aligned with her what she seeks out of life: answers to questions.
This fact actually seems really relevant to me right now because I’m watching season nine and seeing Scully with William. When William is missing in Provenance/Providence, it is so apparent how obligated she feels to caring for him and finding out what he is and all the answers to his existence. She seems more attached to William than she ever seems to be to her siblings or parents. Of course she loves these people in her life and gets much comfort from her mother, but William poses the need for more answers to questions, which, as you said, is what she seeks.
…the disease develops a meaninglessness that neither can quite handle. And it also just makes Mulder feel that the whole thing is entirely his fault. And just more solidly drives home the point that Scully would DEFINITELY not have cancer if it weren’t for him. And that’s why he cries. I feel like the fact that he’s been a pawn in
