1) My husband's German and when he moved to England we got him an account with Lloyds TSB very easily. (I don't know whether or not it will be the same for you as obviously he's an EU citizen, but since you have a visa in your passport then it might well be similar ( ... )

I know that Citi has started offering it's American Airlines rewards card with a chip in it. You might try looking at other cards aimed at travellers.

1) I went with HSBC because they'd open an account for me before I actually moved. Very useful!
2) Increasingly rare, and sometimes the card won't work anyhow. I usually take cash out of ATMs and live a cash-heavy existence.
3) Sorry, can't help. However, be aware that many places are wary of renting to students. Your university probably has a housing bureau that will help with this.
4) None, basically. However, if you get unhappy, Partridges on Gloucester Road has a wide variety of American food.
5) SET UP MAIL FORWARDING! Seriously. This is a pain in the ass if you try to do it too late, because you have to get something notarized and arg.
