[It's a hurt unlike any he's felt before. That's not to say it's the worst pain he's ever felt, but this is... different. His heart hurts.

He's on the stairs up between decks nine and eight. He's heading up to the forest to hide.]

[Jinx has been following Xanth ever since he bolted off. He kept his distance so little Snowy wouldn't hear the clank of his boots.

Don't turn around, Xanth. Jinx may not have enough things to hide behind.]

[Xanth doesn't notice a thing.

But when he gets to the top of the stairs, he just... stops. He covers his face with his hand, takes in a shaky breath, and then slowly sits down on the top step. He's still hiding his eyes.]

[Jinx carefully creeps up the steps behind Xanth. Jinx crouches a bit in surprise when Xanth suddenly stops.

Is Xanth--crying? He'd assumed that the kid's gone through hell and back from the way he stutters, but he's never seen him shed a single tear.

Jinx approaches calmly like he hasn't been following the boy for a good few minutes and places a hand on his shoulder.]

[Xanth takes in a sharp gasp and yanks himself away from Jinx's touch, like it was acid.

Yeah, those are tears.]

J--Jinx? I d-- I th-- I-- uh.

[The surprise wearing off, Xanth hurriedly wipes his eyes with the back of his hand. Don't ask what happened, don't, don't, please.]
