[Are you walking around the temple this fine evening? Well, lucky you! You may have seen the rare Xanth Aumeli darting from building to building. He's not usually up this late at night, but when disturbed from his slumber and placed in a new habitat, sleep is hard to come by ( Read more... )

[The Warrior was wandering among the temple arches, admiring the architecture when he sees...one of the stranger things he can remember.

Clearing his throat, he calls:]

They have been provided as pack animals. They are not dangerous.

[Pack animals!? Xanth looks from the warrior to the capybara, which is thankfully losing interest in him, and back again.]

Th--then why-- wh-why do-d-does it keep f-following me?

[No other animals do this! Donkeys and horses and oxen don't do this!]

I do not know. Perhaps it is a peculiarity of their species to crave company.

[And how peculiar it is. The capybara wanders over to The Warrior and sits in front of him expectantly.

LOVE ME, it says, big eyes blinking once.

Xanth heaves a sigh of relief that it's stopped following him.]

[His own capybara is slightly more subtle than this one, but the Warrior still knows that look. He kneels and pets the creature a few times, before looking up at Xanth.]

Have you just arrived here?

[Capybara is now happybara! :D

Xanth, meanwhile, is the complete opposite of happy. He holds his hands just in front of him, almost wringing them but not quite. What he does is a combination of wringing and... picking.

He nods quickly to The Warrior's question.]

Y-Yes sir, I-I, uh, I just-- got t-to, uh, where-- wherever h-'here' i--is.

[The Warrior is giving you a strange look, Xanth. Why are you calling him sir. Even his comrades don't call him sir, and technically he leads them.]

'Here' is a world called Vertiline. We have been brought here in the hopes that we will aid the locals in their fight against invading monsters. If any weapons were taken from you upon arrival, you can replace them - there is an armory in the temple. But if you had any magical abilities...we do not yet have the means use them.

[With the basic information imparted...]

What is your name?

[He is calling you sir because you are a) older, b) taller, and c) COMMANDING.

Xanth's gaze drifts downwards as he takes in the information. One piece in particular sticks out.]

X--Xanth.

Did, um, wh--what d-did you m-mean, d-don't have th... the means t-to use th-them?

[He doesn't mean to be, okay, he just...is.]

If you were able to use magic, you will find yourself unable to in this place. Apparently there are certain items that can be used to restore abilities, but they are scarce and difficult to find.

[This concept is completely foreign so Xanth. The thought of it, the thought of everyone here being without magic, is just... impossible to get his head around. For a few moments, he just thinks it over.]

Huh.

W-Wow.

[Then the other thing The Warrior said hits, and Xanth's calm breaks.]

W-Wait, did-- d-did you say-- m-m-- monsters?

bellator_lucis January 23 2011, 00:16:47 UTC
I did.

[Hastily, he adds:]

But we have yet to see any sign of them. The only known place that they appear is in the fog, and it is easy enough to stay away from there.

[Okay. They're just in the fog. You can stay away from fog.

Oh, wait, no you can't.]

B-But... ff...fog r--r-rolls in...

bellator_lucis January 23 2011, 23:30:49 UTC
Not this fog.

[He isn't exactly commanding you to stay calm, but his voice isn't leaving a lot of room for doubt.]

It has not moved since we arrived here, two weeks ago.

W-What kind fff-fog is it, th-- th-that doesn't m...move?

I suppose that it must be magical in origin, though whether it was created as a barrier by our hosts or by the monsters, I could not say.

[Xanth gnaws on his lip. It doesn't make sense. Magic can make fog, but can it really be held in place so easily? How very strange.

Still, nothing about this situation isn't strange, or uncomfortable, or frightening. Xanth dips his head and bends at the waist just slightly in a small bow.]

Th-- thank you f--for te-- telling me, s-s--sir.
