Bill Maher is one hella sexy beast.

Get yourself educated. Think, talk, and listen.

One of the best things I've done in 2006 was attend HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" live at the CBS studios in downtown LA on a mild Friday night in March. Because of my own screw-up, sevlow and I almost didn't get in, but we did and it was awesome ( Read more... )

One of my favorite things about Bill Maher is that I can't tell if I like him or not. (Yes, I enjoy it when people confuse me like that.) Politically, he makes some points that need making, but he also occasionally drifts into the realm of oversimplification for humor's sake, à la Jon Stewart. However, if you're a big-time televison personality, I think you're legally required to do that.

Bill Maher pisses me the hell off a lot. I totally agree with the sense of not being able to figure out whether you like him or not (my love and adoration of him is a different story), and he wants it that way. He doesn't want people to always agree with him, but he does want people's arguments to make sense.

Jon Stewart's show . . . meh. The Daily Show makes me laugh, but he glosses over a lot and doesn't actually do that much, with maybe fifteen minutes of actual programming four days a week. I prefer Maher and Colbert, because they at least have more 'meat' on their shows. :P

Well, my not always liking him isn't exactly a result of not always agreeing with him. In a way, I prefer people I don't agree with, as long as they're thinking their argument through, which Maher doesn't always deign to do. He indulges a little too frequently in what I call the "appeal to faux common sense", where the speaker just acts, without much in the way of proof, that all the reason in the world is behind his point of view, and if everyone in power wasn't so dumb, they'd listen to him, because look at how much sense he's making! (He seems to be doing this with his "quit Iraq this nanosecond" argument, but I strongly suspect he's making it for publicity alone.) There's also some appeal to emotion and arguments based on motivation (my least favorite kind) there. As I said, though, he's no worse -- and probably better -- than most talking heads in that regard.

Jon Stewart's personality grates on me very, very badly, which makes me feel out of touch with our entire generation. A lot of Daily Show jokes are essentially political ( ... )
