The smalls are still at an age where they get a bedtime story read to them - usually a chapter of something each night. A couple of nights ago, having finished volume 3 of "All The Wrong Questions", I thought we'd give "The War Of The Worlds" a go - start them young on classic SF

After four rereads in attempt to play devils advocate, the only thing I can think of is that maybe the word "likeness" used to mean affinity/nature/quality more than appearance/semblance?

I was readng a book of trivia from the seventies while at home for Christmas and a dry, gender neutral couple of paragraphs on what an employee can expect in their contract from their new employer finished with "Also applies to female staff."
