I used to always transcribe it with a lowercase g, again because I thought it had a more universal appeal, but my editor corrected me-- saying that since it was American dialogue we were transcribing, it was more appropriate that we use the proper noun. Because generally, the American people believe still do believe in the uppercase God; it says so right there on their currency.
