You're going to have to confront him about this thing sooner or later if you expect to keep having any kind of a healthy relationship with him. He isn't going to be moving half way across the country any time soon. I don't think you're going to be able to get out of this situation and move on without setting everything straight first. It's bad to keep stuff like that under the surface, leaving both people wondering exactly where the other one stands. If you really care about keeping a strong bond between the two of you, I say tell him. Openness and honesty are some of the most important factors in any relationship.
