I have to admit that I was pretty let down by the parts of the Tony awards that I saw last night (fathers day can blow me). I guess Whoopi was funny...but her jokes are kind of old. Sometimes she just looked stupid

Why do you think the revivals this year were the musicals to beat?
I totally agree. Spring Awakening, In the Heights, Passing Strange, sometimes even Rent (although, for reasons I mentioned in my Tony post...I'm okay with Rent)- I just don't get it. That isn't musical theatre. That isn't what I want to pay to go see.
go see in the heights. you'll change your mind. i promise. some of it is rapped, most of his parts are, but the orchestrations are all there and it is very much a traditional show. and what's amazing is he wrote ALL OF IT. music, lyrics, all of it. and he stars in it too. but it is mostly all latin music and it's very catchy. there's lots of cool dancing too. it's really quite clever and extremely heart-felt. i promise you'll like it. it's sortof like fiddler mixed with west side. kindof.
oddly enough, i have to disagree with all of these comments. to paraphrase forbidden broadway's take on all this, when other shows came along that we now think of as classics, they were different and unheard of too. west side story, cabaret, rent, hell even oklahoma when it came out. go see the shows, then make your judgement. the tony performances are convoluted and edited. (though i admit passing strange is a bit. . . strange. i am not going to deny it its brilliance.) i think you'd even like that one if you saw it, laura. ignore the hype, go see it, and then make a judgement for yourself.
