I have to admit that I was pretty let down by the parts of the Tony awards that I saw last night (fathers day can blow me). I guess Whoopi was funny...but her jokes are kind of old. Sometimes she just looked stupid

You know, I was also really disappointed by all the non-revival performances by musicals, but I don't think it's just the fact that there was rap or there was pared-down rock music. It's that it's been done to *death* at this point. Rap categorically embarrasses me so I don't feel like I can judge the quality--maybe it was good rap, maybe it wasn't. And I think incorporating rap into musicals is a completely legitimate jump to make, because musical theatre evolves like every other art form. But my problem is these people seem to just be ripping off the same Jonathan Larson-esque clichés and just churning out the same "edgey" pop musicals over and over again. That cultural work has been done, you know? Get a new idea. That's what upsets me. But it's nice to know someone else was frustrated too. And at least there are some excellent new American straight plays around.
