here! Personality:
Before someone gets to know Doll, they must first understand Freckles.
'Freckles' isn't exactly what you would call a nickname, but it also isn't exactly an alternate personality. Freckles is Doll's way of getting something she needs in her circus life to function normally. As a first tier member of the circus, Doll is given a tent of her own. This should be a luxury, but for Doll is only an inconvenience. Therefore, she and the other first tier members pretend she is Freckles, a young boy who joined the circus as a second tier member. With her physique not yet quite femininely defined by age, "Freckles" is a rather easy image for her to pull off. And, since Freckles is a second tier, Doll is required to share a tent with at least one other person, which in the end grants her exactly what she wants.
A roommate.
Doll is by no means a solitary or shy individual. However, this part of her personality was not something that came naturally, but rather out of necessity. As a child, Doll was raised "too harshly" by her parents. She was abused as a tiny girl to the point that the upper part of her left face was deformed, which included the loss of her left eye. Eventually she ended up in the gutter along with others like her, abandoned by society and left to fade into the woodwork. Luckily that did not happen, but Doll is not without scars because of her childhood, physical and metaphorical. Doll is unable to sleep well without someone else in the room, thus why she goes to great lengths to ensure she gets a roommate. It's safe to say after observing her with her family (not her biological family, but her adoptive one, which consists the first tier circus members) that she has a bit of an abandonment complex, and it's that fear of being abandoned that leads her to even follow her roommate into the infirmary to sleep with him when he falls ill. Being around and openly friendly with others is a reminder to Doll that she is not alone anymore, that she isn't back in that gutter, and that the abuse of her past is far behind her.
Doll's connection to her family is an extremely strong one, as they all share a common tie. Like Doll, every member of her family was cast out or rejected by society because of an unavoidable physical deformity. This group banded together and took care of each other until they were finally taken in and cared for by someone else. Doll, being the youngest of the group, was never in the position of the caretaker, but rather was the one cared for. Because of this, Doll feels an overwhelming responsibility to and thankfulness for her makeshift family, it being the one thing she truly cares about. Like the rest of her family, she feels a connection with anyone who has a physical defect or who has been outcast by society, and seems willing to do anything to help them if it means pleasing her family and helping those she's close to in the process. While it is never gone into if she has a passion for working in the circus, it is safe to say that Doll loves being in the circus regardless, as every day allows her to work with and be close to the only ones she truly cares about. In other words, Doll's life revolves around her family, as they were the only ones to show her love when no one else would.
When first meeting Doll (or rather, Freckles, since she tends to introduce herself as such to strangers), one will immediately notice her upbeat and friendly attitude. She's quick to introduce herself, and even quicker to attempt to get to know someone. Doll is a genuinely friendly person; when she acts nice around you, she's actually being nice. There is very little room for faking in Doll's personality when it comes to things like emotions; she can keep secrets well enough, but faking emotions seems to be something she doesn't really do. She'll also willingly show when she is upset or frustrated, not trying to hide her expression or distaste in something. She's quick to critique someone if they're failing at a task she finds to be simple, and also sees no problem in chastising someone for messing up on a task. Of course, Doll doesn't do this with a malicious attitude; in her mind, it's a simple mess up and while she may be upset at the time, it doesn't change her attitude towards someone. If you're friends at the beginning of the day, as long as you don't wrong the people she cares about, you're friends at the end with Doll.
Another upfront aspect about Doll is she has very little shame when it comes to modesty, and seems to expect other people to act the same. When Ciel doesn't believe she's a girl, she takes his hand herself and places it on her chest so he can feel her breasts. She even offers to let him "peek below" if he still needed convincing. She doesn't seem to see any problem in bathing with other people, either, and never seems to find any situations involving these awkward, sometimes not even understanding why others would. Doll also doesn't seem to have any problem with a girl sharing a room with a guy; even after Ciel discovers she is a girl, her concern is whether or not he'd feel comfortable sharing a tent with a first tier member. She doesn't even ask if he'd be comfortable with her as a girl, as that has never been an issue in her eyes.
Doll is an individual that puts 100% of herself into everything. She rarely half-asses something, and commits herself entirely to a situation. If she fails at something she is involved in, she tends to beat herself up a bit, but never to a self-destructive point. She feels guilty if she believes she has done something wrong, and she is willing to accept the blame. When upset, she gets quiet and a bit depressed, beating herself up over something until she is told that it either isn't her fault or is forgiven by those involved.
One of Doll's biggest downfalls is her naivety. Doll tends to believe in the best of people until she is blatantly proved wrong. She needs to see something with her own eyes to really believe it if it is about someone's character; even when her family tries to convince her she has been deceived, she still has doubts that they're right. She easily believes Ciel's lies and excuses for why he was sneaking around, and takes his explanation as truth without question. She seems to believe that someone like Ciel can't be lying because he is a kid, and because they were nice to each other. It is only when she is directly faced with the admission that he is responsible for her family's death that she genuinely believes that he had been deceiving her.
Doll is also not the most cultured of individuals, and growing up in the situation she has, she is also not the most intelligent. She isn't stupid by any means, though given her situation as a child it is easy to assume she was never given any sort of formal education, and therefore "book smarts" are not her forte. Also because of her upbringing, it would be easy to assume she knows street smarts, but given her age she is still very naive when it comes to other people. This naivety attributes to the picture of her intelligence, as she seems to easily fall for promises and fake personas if they are pulled off well. She grew up being exposed to cruel or abusive individuals who openly showed their cruel and abusive sides, therefore she seems to still be under the impression that people of that nature are more obvious in their actions.
One last interesting attribute of Doll is the one notable personality difference she has from "Freckles". Doll seems to be a little less eccentric than Freckles; however, this is mainly shown in serious situations, so it may be relative to the situation. She also acts a little less forward and sometimes a bit timid in more serious situations as Doll, especially around her older brothers and sisters. Doll seems to hold an idea that the youngest or younger of groups should allow the older people involved to take charge; she certainly acts a bit more like an authority figure around the younger Ciel, not afraid of reprimanding him when he has done something wrong or messed up, but becomes quiet when discussing things with her older brothers and sisters. She is the baby of her makeshift family, and seems to acts accordingly in most situations. Overall, though, "Freckles" and Doll are one in the same.
Extra:
Character Abilities: Doll has impeccable balance. She is extremely skilled on the high wire, and also seems to have pretty good reflexes and speed in her movements, as she was able to catch a quick and poisonous snake with her bare hands before it could react. She also knows how to ride a horse fairly well, and it's implied she knows how to cook.
Possessions: Her clothes/cloak, and a dagger hidden away.
Anything else: Doll has an odd tendency to change the way she speaks depending on who she is around. When she's first introduced, around strangers and new people she has a very relaxed way of speaking, with a thick accent and the use a lot of slang, as well as dropping many of her t's, g's, etc. Around those she's comfortable with (or when she's being serious) however, her speech patterns become a bit more proper. Chances are her broken speech is just a way to add more weight to "Freckles", but it is also likely that that is how she normally speaks, and simply talks clearer when she wants other people to understand her better (for instance, in serious situations).
Also, since even the first tier members refer to Doll using masculine pronouns when she is masquerading as Freckles, I plan to do so as well in narration.
