Dealing with a chronic health issue or pain issue or disability is something that most healthy people cannot even begin to grasp as a daily reality. It's hard to explain how it really impacts your life ( Read more... )

i've had on again off again health issues for 4-5 years now and all are of this type. nothing anyone looking at you can see. the stroke was the worst because the impairments are subtle(in my case) and not readily apparent as in extreme cases.

Yeah, it does a good job of summing it up. It really clicked for me when I saw the bit about 'borrowing' the next day's supply of spoons, lol. For me, the spoon analogy plus a house of cards would work. What doesn't bang me on the asthma, or the degenerative disk disease in my neck, WILL topple the tower of cards if I trigger a food allergy response. If I am coping and eating well, then the wood smoke when I walk the dog wipes out my personal silverware drawer. And I don't even want to do the calculations on the medicine interactions I have begun struggling with of late.

You do know now, that everytime something pings my temper, I will want to throw SPOONS now? Right?

absolutely it explains it. especially people with "hidden" disabilites, and ones who might be having a MARVELOUS day one day...then a week of barely able to move.

thanks for posting this. :)

You're welcome. I'm barely moving this week, so it was particularly apt. ;-)

Wow. It's been a long time since I've been to that site. The last time was when I was very ill; and it still boggles my mind to think how many more spoons I get to start with now and how much easier it is to keep them. I mean, I'm not going to say I'm totally a healthy person, but the difference from a year ago is amazing. I didn't even realize how much pain I was constantly in, let alone that that was a key factor to the "loss of spoons" everyday. Of course, I also think the strict diet helps as does having the airborne allergies somewhat under control, but even combined those didn't make as substantial difference by itself as the surgery did ( ... )
