I'm in a bit of a bind in the house I moved into recently our stove is propane and the oven flat out doesn't work, but even if we got it fixed we still couldn't use it since the deposit to turn on the propane is the same as our rent ($700) and we just can't afford it. So right now we have one electric burner and a microwave, oh and I rice pot, to ( Read more... )

The asian market nearby where I live has these chinese noodles that cook in boiling water much faster than normal spaghetti, if you can boil water. Hell, if you have a big enough microwave proof container, you could boil water in the microwave. Chinese noodles are awesome. They cook so fast because though they're dry, they're thicker and not as hard and water-resistent as spaghetti. Hard to explain, but trust me, they cook fast. Like, I'll put spaghetti in and it'll sit there for several minutes before it really gets going on cooking. Chinese noodles start sinking into the pot from cooking as soon as I plop them in, and go down fast. They're done in less than half the time of spaghetti.

I'll have to see if I can find any anywhere. I live in a really small town and the Asian food selection is tiny... which sucks I'm missing a lot of my favorite dishes. Thank you for the suggestion though, I'll see if they have anything when I go out tomorrow.

I believe rice noodles also cook very fast, too. Don't know for sure, though, because I personally don't like rice noodles. But my GF swears by them.

When you say electric burner, do you mean like one stovetop burner? That's all I had when I lived in Prague for school and we made tons of stuff - quasadillas, pasta, stirfry, mac and cheese, to name a few.

I had one burner to use when I lived overseas, and I found ham to be very useful. Since it's already smoked/cooked, it just needs to be heated, meaning you don't let one part of your meal get too cold while you're cooking the other. One easy, quick and yummy (plus filling) dish was to make a pot of couscous. When you take it off the burner to steam/finish cooking, put some cubed ham and peas in a frying pan to heat through. Add to couscous, add shredded cheese if desired, then add BBQ sauce. Stir and enjoy! Plus of course grilled ham & cheese sandwiches - on bread or in a tortilla.

Any number of pasta dishes should work. You can do a pasta carbonara with peas easily with one burner. First cook the bacon, then boil a pot of water and cook the pasta. While that's going, get your eggs and cheese ready. When the pasta is almost done, put some frozen peas in a strainer and dip them into the hot water to warm them through. Drain the noodles, mix with the egg/cheese/bacon/peas and you're done!

I've also just done regular spaghetti with red sauce in one pot. When I drain the pasta, I leave the burner on, put the pot back on the stove, add the sauce, heat it through and then dump the pasta back in.

Pesto would be dead easy.

You can make any number of soups/stews.

Grilled sandwiches (not just cheese, but that works, too).

Stir fry.
