Damn, damn, damn.
The brunette fidgeted in his seat, unable to stay still while the plane tore through the layers of cloud in the sky. He bit his lip, wondering where to start looking once he touched down. If only the plane would go faster. If only he were in Japan already.
He hadn’t thought that it’d take this long, that the song would take forever to write, when he agreed to write one more song before he resigned. He hadn’t considered the possibility that his heart would be too much on Jaejoong and too little on the song. All he thought about - after having forced himself to turn off his phone for so many days subsequent to hearing news about Jaejoong’s imminent transfer to Japan, and locking himself in his room to sit through Jaejoong’s departure entirely - were Jaejoong and Japan. He had initially been out-of-reach while writing a song of their own to surprise Jaejoong with (which got put on hold for the other song to be submitted), after Jae suggested they write a song together. And it had turned out to be nothing but great timing - because Jae had to go to Japan; leave all this behind.
He has nothing to stay for, Yoochun thought fiercely, over the gurgling of a toddler just woken up and the consistent mechanical hum of the engine.
And he would follow Jae, because he wasn’t about to lose Jae again.
Jae, wait for me. 3 months late, but I’m only a few more hours away. Wait for me.
---
Business was slow. But Jaejoong was not put-off - in fact, he was grateful for the brief respite during which he chose to scrutinise Hero’s designs for the new season. He was poring over an intriguing detail when the bell on the door tinkled a little, announcing the arrival of a customer into the store.
Going into his friendly-store-manager mode, he turned around to face the newcomer with a smile on his face.
‘Welc “
The rest of the greeting died on his lips as it morphed into a delighted shriek, while the owner of the noise rushed towards the person at the door, immediately jumping onto him in a koala bear hug.
“YOOCHUN!!”
Jaejoong could remember having a list of ten thousand reasons not to forgive the other man that he made in the first month he had spent in Japan, but he honestly couldn’t bring himself to care about even one as he squeezed the breath out of his soulmate. He had missed him so much. And everything was okay because Yoochun was here now, laughing the laugh that Jaejoong had missed and hugging him back the way Jaejoong remembered his hug to be.
“Way to carry the image of Hero, huh, hyung?”, Yoochun teased, voice slightly muffled by the material of Jaejoong’s shirt, and Jaejoong could sense the lewd smirk creeping across his face. Jaejoong protested with a half-hearted whack to the back of his head, but slid down to support his own weight anyway (just in case someone decided to look through the glass display and saw the not-so-appropriate display).
They stood for a moment, grinning widely at each other, and then Yoochun broke the silence.
“I’ve missed you, hyung.”
---
Jaejoong strode into the sushi bar, hand-in-hand with Yoochun, looking for all the world like an excited kid dragging his favourite teddy bear across the floor.
“Yam! Yam! Yam! You have to come out now!”
The man in question appeared at the entrance to the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel while turning his gaze to the source of the ruckus. His smile, broad and inviting, never left his face, and Yoochun decided, quite spontaneously, that he liked this man.
“Thisismybestfriendinthewholewideworldandhe’salsomybrother!” Jae gushed indecipherably.
“What?“ Yamamoto’s face scrunched up (adorably, in Jaejoong’s opinion) in confusion.
“Please ignore his behavior; I’m Yoochun, brother and best friend to this three-year-old beside me with whom I had the misfortune to be stuck with. Oh, did I also mention that he’s utterly incapable of speech?” Yoochun spoke, as he extended his hand (the one that wasn’t in Jaejoong’s death-grip) out to Yamamoto.
“Yah! ”
“I’m Yamamoto, you might have heard from this kid’s yelling earlier. I have the misfortune of being in love with said kid, who’s entirely noisy, wild and incapable of speech, like you said.”, Yamamoto cut into Jaejoong’s rant smoothly, and shook Yoochun’s proffered hand, the two sharing a smile.
“I like this guy!” Yoochun exclaimed to Jaejoong in mock surprise.
The muttered reply came with a pout: “I already hate you both.”
The two newly-met burst out in peals of laughter.
---
“ and so then, Yam took me to the dojo. You should have seen him with the katana - it’d blow you away! He loves it, and he looks sooo focused when he does it, there’s just no way to describe the difference - you have to see it to believe it!”
Yoochun hummed in reply as Jaejoong paused to take a much-needed breath.
“What?”, Jaejoong asked, belatedly wondering if there was something on his face, because Yoochun was staring at his face, contemplatively.
“No, nothing, just… thinking.”
Jaejoong frowned and argued, “That is not a nothing stare and you definitely do not just think nothing.”
Yoochun paused, collecting his thoughts and emotions that were all over the place, then answered softly, “…it’s just that, you’ve been talking about nothing but Yam.”
“..oh, I’m sorry, Chunnie. I really am. …honestly, do you not like it, Yoochun? That Yam and I are together?”
A distraught tone had weaved its way into Jaejoong’s voice and Yoochun briefly considered shooting himself in the face for not phrasing things correctly and, with that thought, threw all his conviction and fervor and affirmation into the next few sentences.
“NO! No, no, no, hyung, really. I’m happy! I like Yam - I know I’ve only known him for a little while, but the way he looks at you, I know he wouldn’t hurt you; he’d protect you and keep you safe and love you.”
“The truth?”
“Nothing but the truth,” Yoochun pledged, holding up his pinky like a knight proudly flaunting his sword. They hooked pinkies, relishing in the longstanding tradition, and grinning at each other over their linked fingers. Then Yoochun’s look turned exceedingly tender, a small but sincere smile playing on his lips, and his eyes filled as he whispered, “It’s just “
His voice died off, raw with more emotions than what was reflected in his eyes, and he had to try again.
“It’s just that it’s been a while since I’ve seen you like this. And when you’re happy, I’m happy.”
