CLARK:- I need to be honest with you.
LANA:- That would be refreshing.
LANA:- Clark, I need you to look me in the eye and tell me that you don’t love me.
CLARK:- I don’t love you.
* * *
LANA:- It’s over. Forever

LEX:- Why do you do this to yourself, Lana?
Lana took a tissue from Lex. She blew he nose and wiped her tears before looking at him.
LANA:- I don’t know what happened.
LEX:- All he does is hurt you.
LANA:- Clark loves me, Lex.
LEX:- He just told you that he didn’t.
LANA:- He was lying.
LEX:- How can you believe that? After everything that he’s done.
LANA:- I can believe it because of everything he’s done.
LEX:- Lana, if you stay with him, he will only hurt you more.
LANA:- What do you suggest, Lex?
LEX:- Be the girl who goes to Paris.
LANA:- Paris?
LEX:- Or Rome. Or Egypt. Don’t be the girl that gets hurt by the one she loves.
LANA:- That’s just it, Lex. I love him too much to walk away again.
LEX:- I think you have to.
LANA:- I can’t.
Lana shook her head and stood up.
LEX:- Lana, wait. Just consider it for a second.
Lex stood.
LEX:- When you were with Whitney, you were happy. When you were with Jason, you were happy.
LANA:- Well, they’re both gone.
LEX:- But you can be happy again.
LANA:- I was happy with Clark.
LEX:- You haven’t been happy for a long time, Lana. I’m not suggesting that you stay away forever. Just clear your head. Find out what is really important to you. Find out what you want.
LANA:- I know what I want, Lex.
LEX:- You can’t know it with Clark around. Your love for him is clouding your mind. You could happy with someone else.
LANA:- Like who? You?
Lex lowered his eyes.
LANA:- That’s a nice thought, Lex, but there won’t be anyone else.
Lana turned and walked out the door.
Lana emerged from Lex’s mansion and headed for her car.
CLARK:- Why is it that whenever we have problems, you run to Lex?
LANA:- Clark, what are you doing here? Did you follow me?
CLARK:- You answer my question first.
He stumble forward.
LANA:- Are you drunk?
CLARK:- A little bit. I answered your question, now answer mine!
LANA:- I come to Lex because he’s my friend and I trust him. Sometimes he’s the only one I can talk to.
CLARK:- I don’t believe you.
LANA:- I’m not the one who keeps lying, Clark.
CLAKR:- I’ve seen the way he looks at you.
LANA:- And he sees the way I look at you!
Clark lowered his eyes to the ground.
CLARK:- Lana…
LANA:- No, Clark. We said it was over forever, remember?
CLARK:- No, you said that.
LANA:- And you said…Y’know what? I can’t do this.
Lana spun around and headed for her car. She was almost there, almost safe, when Clark grabbed her arm. He spun her to face so swiftly that she lost her balance and fell against him. They starred at each other for a long moment, unable to speak. She could feel his heart beating against her palm. She felt everything rushing back. She closed her eyes and a movie of every glance, every caress, every dance and every kiss played on the black screens of her eyelids. At first everything moved slowly. But then the pictures in her head moved so fast and with so much intensity that it became to much.
LANA:- No!
She screamed and pushed him away.
LANA:- You’ve broken my heart too many times.
CLARK:- And I’ve put it back together.
LANA:- I don’t want you to this time.
CLARK:- I wasn’t thinking when I said…I meant it when I said it was forever, Lana.
LANA:- So did I, Clark.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Lana knew that all Clark had to say how sorry he was, and promise that it would be different this time, and she’d be back in his arms. She hated herself for being so weak when it came to this man. He opened his mouth and she closed her eyes.
CLARK:- Goodnight, Lana.
She sighed and slowly opened her eyes. She looked into his eyes and knew that he was wishing that she would forgive him. That she would run into his arms and kiss him. But she also knew that she needed to be strong. This time really was going to be different.
Clark watched as Lana climbed into her car and drove off, without saying a word. He turned his head and looked at Lex’s mansion. And in less than a second, he was inside.
CLARK:- I don’t understand how she can come to you.
LEX:- Clark, what are you doing here?
CLARK:- I mean, look at who you are. You’re a Luther.
LEX:- Only by blood, Clark. Of people you should know that the blood that runs through our veins doesn’t determine who we are.
CLARK:- You’d think that, wouldn’t you. But I’m starting to think differently.
Clark took a step forward and tripped - over nothing.
LEX:- Are you ok?
CLARK:- Am I supposed to believe that you really care?
LEX:- Are you drunk, Clark?
CLARK:- It’s funny. I only had one drink, but now I have a broken leg.
LEX:- You have a broken leg?
CLARK:- That’s what I said, Lex. Not everything that comes out of my mouth is a lie!
LEX:- Maybe we shouldn’t talk when you’re like this.
CLARK:- When I’m like what? What is wrong with the way I am? Is this because I’m a farm boy?
LEX:- Go home, Clark.
CLARK:- I’m not going anywhere until you tell me why she runs to you.
LEX:- I don’t know what you’re talking about.
CLARK:- it can’t be that you’re better looking than me, because let’s face it…you’re not. You don’t even have hair.
LEX:- Bald jokes? Funny. Now stop it, Clark. Before someone says something they’ll regret.
CLARK:- I won’t. It’s only now that I can say what I really think of you. You’re exactly like your father.
LEX:- Now I know why she wants to walk away from you.
CLARK:- But she didn’t say goodbye.
LEX:- So, she didn’t tell you. Interesting.
Clark felt his body suddenly fill up with rage. He charged at Lex and grabbed him by the shirt.
CLARK:- You told her to leave me
LEX:- No, I didn’t.
CLARK:- I know what you feel for her!
LEX:- And what she feels for you is bigger. I wouldn’t do anything to come between the two of you.
CLARK:- You’re a liar!
Clarks pushed Lex away with only enough force to make him stumble backward.
LEX:- Clark, you have my word.
CLARK:- As a Luther, your word is kinda shot to hell.
LEX:- Do my feelings really matter, Clark? You won.
CLARK:- But if she leaves, I lose.
LEX:- So, stop her.
CLARK:- I don’t think I can.
LEX:- Give her the one thing she’s always wanted.
Clark lowered his eyes to the ground.
LEX:- It must be easier.
CLARK:- What?
LEX:- Keeping everything inside. It is for me. But then again, there isn’t someone in my life worth sharing all my secrets with.
CLARK:- I’m not keeping anything from her, Lex
LEX:- Ok, Clark, you stick to that story. But did you think that if you told her the secrets you don’t have, that she’d stay?
When Lana emerged from the Talon, carrying a cup of coffee, she noticed Clark sitting on the front of her car. She stopped for a moment and thought about running in the other direction. She wasn’t ready to talk to him again. And the truth is, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever be ready.
LANA:- What do you want, Clark?
CLARK:- I want to apol-
LANA:- I don’t want an apology, Clark. Lex might though.
CLARK:- Lex?
Clark rolled his eyes.
CLARK:- Well, if you don’t an apology, what do you want?
LANA:- I want…you to get off my car.
Clark slid to his feet.
CLARK:- Sorry.
Lana rolled her eyes as she passed him.
CLARK:- I just wasn’t sure if I’d get the chance to apologise to you again.
LANA:- What are you talking about?
CLARK:- Well, you’re leaving.
LANA:- Says who?
CLARK:- Lex said something…
LANA:- Lex, doesn’t have all the facts.
CLARK:- So, you’re not leaving?
LANA:- I don’t know, Clark. There still might be something here for me.
Clark lowered his eyes to the road beneath his feet.
LANA:- Look, Clark, I know that things are over between us, but…
Clark raised his eyes and looked at her.
CLARK:- Lana, what do you want from me?
LANA:- I want the one thing you’ve never been able to give me.
CLARK:- I’ve given you everything, Lana.
LANA:- Except the truth.
They just starred at each other for a long moment.
LANA:- I’m not going to get it, am I?
Clark didn’t say anything.
LANA:- It’s ok, Clark.
Lana turned around and opened the door to her car. After glancing at Clark one more time, she climbed into the driver’s seat. She placed the coffee cup into the cup holder and her bag onto the passenger seat. She pulled her seatbelt on and slid the key into the ignition before looking toward him again. When she turned her head to where Clark stood, he was gone. As she pulled away from the curb and started down the road, a tear rolled down her cheek.
Clark stood out the front of Lex’s mansion and starred at the house.
LEX:- What are you doing out here, Clark?
CLARK:- I didn’t know if I’d be welcomed in your house after…
Clark turned and faced Lex.
LEX:- C’mon, Clark, we’ve been through worse things than this.
CLARK:- Lana said she doesn’t know if she’s leaving.
LEX:- Let’s hope she doesn’t.
CLARK:- I’ve been thinking. Maybe it’s better if she does. For her, I mean. I want her to be happy.
LEX:- And you don’t think she was happy with you?
CLARK:- Lana hasn’t been happy for a while.
LEX:- Clark, there’s something I need to say. I did tell Lana to leave.
CLARK:- What?
LEX:- Not leave you, but leave Smallville.
CLARK:- Not really seeing a difference.
LEX:- Clark, Lana needs to figure out what she wants. Being around you clouds her mind. She can’t see passed you.
CLARK:- What’s passed me? You?
LEX:- Clark, I didn’t do this for me. I was only thinking of Lana.
CLARK:- Yeah, well, keep your mind off her.
Clark spun around and walked away.
Lana was sitting on the couch in Clark’s loft when he entered. Her eyes were closed. Clark smiled. She looked so peaceful.
CLARK:- Lana?
She opened her eyes and saw Clark standing at the top of the stairs.
CLARK:- What are you doing here?
LANA:- I’ve, um, been doing a lot of thinking over the last two hours.
CLARK:- And?
LANA:- And I’ve decided it’s not ok. I need to know what could possibly be worth losing me over.
CLARK:- Lana, I’m not…
LANA:- See, I have this dream, Clark. I’ve had it every night for the past couple of weeks. And it’s all about you.
CLARK:- Why are you telling me this?
LANA:- Because I need you to understand, Clark. In my dream, we are in a place that I’ve been to. I don’t even know if it’s real. Everything is white. And it looks like it’s -
CLARK:- A padded room and Bel Reeve?
LANA:- Nice time to make jokes, Clark.
CLARK:- I’m sorry, but I don’t see what’s so important about a dream. I’ve had a lot with you in them.
LANA:- Clark, I’ve never had a dream that felt this real. You…you…
CLARK:- I what?
LANA:- You opened yourself to me. For the first time you showed me who you really are.
CLARK:- And?
LANA:- And it was beautiful. I accepted every part of you, Clark.
CLARK:- Lana, I’ve shown you who I am.
LANA:- No, you haven’t. Clark, you know me inside and out, but there are parts of you that you’ve never let me close to.
CLARK:- What do you want from me?
LANA:- Why do you ask me that when you never give me what I want?
Clark lowered his eyes.
LANA:- Clark, tell me it’s not a dream. Tell me it’s going to happen.
CLARK:- What does it matter? Don’t you already know?
Lana took a step closer to him and he looked up at her.
LANA:- I never actually get see the part where you tell me. Clark, if it can happen like my dream, then you know that it’ll be ok.
CLARK:- Lana…
He took a step back.
LANA:- You do this in my dream, too.
CLARK:- Do what?
LANA:- You pull away from me. You take it back. Everything you tell me, you take it back. Like…like it was a mistake.
CLARK:- See, maybe its better that you don’t know.
LANA:- That I don’t know what you’re not hiding? Fine, Clark. And just so you know, I am leaving. My plane leaves at 7pm tomorrow.
CLARK:- Where are you going?
Lana shook her head and head for the stairs.
CLARK:- Aren’t you going to tell me?
Lana stopped but didn’t look at him.
LANA:- I don’t want you to find me, Clark.
Then she was gone.
MARTHA:- Clark, you’re dinner is ready.
Martha said as she walked up the stairs to the loft. Her eyes fell upon Clark. He was sitting on the couch holding a photo.
MARTHA:- Clark?
CLARK:- I’m going to lose her, mum. She’s going to get on a plane and fly out of my life. And there’s not a thing I can do about it.
MARTHA:- Maybe it’s for the best.
CLARK:- I was thinking that, too. But the more I think of my life without her….I’ve always pictured her in my life, in some way, but now my stupid secret is ruining everything.
MARTHA:- Clark, you’re secret has made a lot of things possible. Think about all the times you’ve saved lives. Lana’s life.
CLARK:- And all the times it’s come between us.
MARTHA:- Clark.
CLARK:- You’re right, mum. I can’t tell her. Look at what happened the two times I did.
MARTHA:- Clark.
CLARK:- It isn’t fair to keep doing this to her. I have to let her go.
MARTHA:- Clark, will you be quiet for one minute, please?
CLARK:- Sorry.
Clark closed his mouth and smiled at his mother.
MARTHA:- Maybe you should tell her.
CLARK:- Have you heard a word that I’ve said?
MARTHA:- All of them. But what’s the worst that could happen?
CLARK:- She could hate me or kill me. Or she could be killed.
MARTHA:- The first one didn’t really happen, Clark.
CLARK:- The second one did.
MARTHA:- Clark, a lot has happened since then. Things could turn out differently.
CLARK:- I can’t let her die again.
MARTHA:- Maybe she won’t.
Martha walked over and sat beside her son. She took the photo out of his hand and glanced at it.
MARTHA:- Listen to me, Clark. One day Lana will die. How will you feel that day?
CLARK:- It’ll break my heart.
MARTHA:- Will you feel relief or regret that you didn’t share this with her?
CLARK:- But she could die.
MARTHA:- And she could live. Happily. With you.
Clark shook his head slowly and opened his mouth to say something, but Martha beat him to it.
MARTHA:- Sometimes it’s better to follow your heart, Clark.
She handed the photo back to him.
MARTHA:- Don’t let yours fly away.
Martha stood and headed toward the stairs.
CLARK:- Mum?
She turned and looked at him.
MARTHA:- Don’t worry, I’ll put your dinner in the oven.
CLARK:- Thanks.
Before Martha had a chance to leave the barn, Clark flew past her.
Clark was halfway to the Metropolis airport when he realised that he needed to see Chloe. It was only now, after realising that Lana could be gone forever, that Clark understood the pain that he had caused Chloe. She was his best friend. She had stood by him without letting her un-returned feelings get the better of her. They had had their differences, but when it came down to it, Chloe had always been there. He couldn’t imagine life without her. He stopped and slid his cell phone out of his pocket. After dialling Chloe’s number, he placed the phone to his ear.
CHLOE:- hello?
CLARK:- Chloe, its Clark. I really need to see you.
CHLOE:- What’s wrong?
CLARK:- Nothing. I just need to see you. Where are you?
CHLOE:- Somewhere I thought you’d be.
CLARK:- Huh?
CHLOE:- I’m at the airport seeing Lana off.
CLARK:- ok.
Clark closed his phone and slid it into his pocket, before speeding toward the airport.
CHLOE:- Clark.
He snapped his head around as Chloe’s voice filled his ears.
CHLOE:- What was so urgent that it couldn’t-
LANA:- Clark?
Clark turned and looked at her.
LANA:- What are you doing here?
CLARK:- I came to…to see Chloe. Excuse us for a second.
Clark turned slightly and grabbed Chloe’s arm.
CHLOE:- Don’t you think you should be using this time to say goodbye to Lana? Or maybe get her to stay?
Chloe said as Clark pulled her away form Lana. He stopped and faced her.
CLARK:- Chloe, I…I’m so sorry.
CHLOE:- For what? Oh my, god, are you dying?
CLARK:- What? No.
CHLOE:- Ok. Well, what’s with the apology? What’s it for?
CLARK:- For hurting you.
CHLOE:- hurting me? Clark ,I don’t understand.
CLARK:- I didn’t either, but now I know. The way you feel about me, is the way I feel about Lana.
CHLOE:- I don’t really want to hear where this is going, Clark.
CLARK:- I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for not feeling the same.
CHLOE:- You’re going to tell her, aren’t you?
Clark slowly nodded.
CHLOE:- And if she still leaves? What then?
Clark didn’t say anything but Chloe already knew his answer. Chloe closed her eyes to stop her tears. When she opened them again Clark was no longer looking at her. He was looking passed her. He was looking at Lana.
CHLOE:- Clark?
CLARK:- Sometimes you just have to follow your heart.
CHLOE:- You’re going to follow your heart wherever she goes, aren’t you, Clark?
CLARK:- ‘Til the end of the earth.
Clark slowly nodded.
CLARK:- That’s why I needed to say sorry. I may not get another chance.
Chloe smiled weakly.
CLARK:- You need to know, that whatever happens, I will never forget you, Chloe.
Clark wrapped his arms around her.
CHLOE:- I’ll never forget you, Clark.
Chloe breathed him in.
CLARK:- So, you be safe.
Clark took a step back.
CHLOE:- Yeah, you too.
CLARK:- If I leave, it’ll be hard not seeing you.
CHLOE:- Yeah, but you’ve got to follow your heart.
She smiled at Clark. He smiled back and slowly nodded. As he walked passed her and over to Lana, Chloe turned and watched them.
CLARK:- Lana, I think we should talk.
LANA:- Clark, can’t it wait? My flight is going to be boarding soon.
CLARK:- I don’t think it can because you’re leaving. This could be my last chance.
Lana slowly nodded.
LANA:- Ok, Clark.
CLARK:- You need to take my hand.
LANA:- You can’t tell me here?
CLARK:- I could, but I think it’s better if I show you.
Clark stretched out his hand and Lana lowered her eyes to it. Everything was suddenly starting to feel very familiar. As she placed her hand into his, she looked up at him.
LANA:- Yes, Clark, I trust you.
