Finally it has come to pass that the physical part of this has changed, I am moved in, nowhere near organised though! which is why this will be a little short update. This feels alot more like home than I thought it would. which is good

Yeah, if it's not a problem him being there, leave him to it and don't force him! You could try to coax him out with a chase-toy (string / feather etc), or give him a different secure place to hide if the sofa's not convenient - he wants somewhere dark and enclosed because it feels secure. Just make sure that this place can be his haven and that he won't be bothered or frightened there.
Personally I'd pop a litter tray down there with him at one end, some food and water at the other end, a comfy cushion in the middle and leave him to it - he shouldn't take long to feel secure enough to start exploring. (I once had a cat live in the airing cupboard for 5 days after he was traumatised by a car breakdown. He ended up being fine, so I'm sure Mouw will be too!)
