Bedsit = bed sitting room. Generally just one room with a corner of kitchen gubbins in it ranging from microwave to oven to mini fridge.

Studio = generally will be larger than a bedsit and you'll get your own bathroom. Definition might vary from one room with kitchen, sitting room and pull down bed, to a sitting room with kitchen area and separate bedroom, to a sitting room with separate kitchen and a bed on a mezannine floor.

Flat may be either of the above depending on the landlord. Generally, I'd look for the term 'self-contained flat'.

Also, go for the fringe. ;)

Wow, some of your studios sound posh. I've never seen it to mean anything other then 1 room that is living room/bedroom/kitchen, and a bathroom. I'd say a flat was one with a separate kitchen and bedroom, unless of course they sneak one of the other terms before the word flat.

How was your garret any different then renting a "room in a shared house" Pnos?

I'm getting very confused by all this, and I thought I knew what it all meant.

Believe me, I can understand the confusion! Perhaps it's just because I'm in Leeds where the estate agents always try and make a silk purse from a sow's ear! I got equally confused when looking for a one bedroom place for next year as I only have experiences of rooms in shared houses.

In most cases, Ceri, I'd look for the term 'self-contained' flat and the words 'separate bedroom'. In my opinion, it's worth paying a teensy bit more for a separate sleeping space as pull-down beds or sofa beds are fine for friends staying over but not a lovely permanent solution.

By this point in my life, I don't reckon I could cope w/ either a studio or bedsit, whatever the hell they actually are (a bit of a squash/compromise, it seems, if nothing more consistently specific), so I'm sticking to seeking out flats for now... May have to revise plans based on how quickly I get nowhere fast, but for now, I'm gunning for autonomy and independence!!

How's young Will Snakespeare getting along these days?

Flat has multiple rooms, including separate kitchen, bathroom, bedroom(s), living space.

Studio is a flat but where the kitchen and bedroom are integrated with the living space, but the bathroom is separate and private.

Bedsit, you have one room (probably small) incorating living area and bedroom, and possibly small cooking area. Bathroom is shared out separate, and possibly kitchen too.

Or at least that's what I *think* is the difference. What does Wikipedia say?

Heh, I think your definitions are the closest match here for the ones I'd have given before I started trawling through the small ads, and got myself thoroughly confused!

Wikipedia confused me even more, by redirecting me to the full and lengthy entry for apartment when I looked for studio in this sense! I give up trying to keep on top of the terminology... :-)

So how is the house-hunting going? Ready to dress in leather boots and cotton tunics with a quivver of feathers and a bow over your shoulders and a broadsword at your side, to go out and find yourself a 'settlement'...?
