I just put a wifi card in my laptop that is totally not supposed to work. My lappy is supposed to only work with the small original airport card. I found a regular wifi card that had the same chipset as the airport card and butchered it to make it fit. took all the plastic and metal covers off and I even filed down some parts if it, but I have

Apple's history with control over hardware is downright ridiculous.

Sounds like it was the sort of project I love working on :D

actually I heard that the problem came from the lucent (orinoco) side of the equation because they would make more on the proprietary cards or something... i don't remember the whole story, but, supposedly, apple isn't to blame for this one... but they do usually get their panties in a wad over hardware.
