100 FEMALE TV CHARACTERS

(In alphabetical order by first name because, well, A) it would take me about 100 years to try to rank these 100 ladies, but more importantly, B) I want this to be more about celebrating how awesome these ladies all are and not about who's the best or whatever. And it's by first name instead of last because of the way I had my spreadsheet organized. And yes, I used a spreadsheet to figure this all out. It was the only way to narrow this down to 100 and keep track of everyone!!! I'm still afraid I might be forgetting someone I really love who should've made the list.)

21. Britta Perry (Community)

Britta: Fine! I cared. I'm a girly-girl. I like boys, and I don't like it when they're mean to me, and I don't like it when they stop kissing me and start kissing my friends. I'm not that cool, okay, I'm not Juno, homeslice.

I don't love what the show chooses to do with her a lot of the time, but I do love Britta quite a bit. I like how committed and passionate she is to what she believes in, and she gets things wrong sometimes, but she's always well-meaning. I do like that the show started off with her seeming pretty together and slowly revealed that she really doesn't know what she's doing with her life and has her own insecurities.

22. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Guy: But… you're just a girl.
Buffy: That's what I keep saying.

Buffy's not my absolute favorite character from Whedonverse, or even just from BtVS, but she was definitely one of the first female TV characters I really remember loving, and she'll always have a special place in my heart. I don't really know what to say about her that hasn't already been said a thousand different times in much better ways, but I do love her, and I'm sure I always will. I didn't love what the show did with her in seasons 6-7, but I did always love her strength on the show, and by that I don't mean physical strength, but just everything she had to go through with being killed by the Master at 16 and Angel during eveil and her having to kill him and her mom dying and so much more, and how she was always able to somehow keep going.

23. C.J. Cregg (The West Wing)

C.J.: This guy’s trying to get a little bit of free media by screwing with us. I’m the enforcer, Sam. I’m gonna crush him, I’m gonna make him cry, and then I’m gonna tell his mama about it!

Is there anyone who's seen The West Wing and doesn't love C.J.? She's another character who I don't feel like I really need to extol the virtues of since everyone's already said it better than I could. I loved how great she was at her job and how dedicated she was to Bartlett, I loved her humor, I loved how she was able to be successful in a world that was definitely male-dominated but she was also allowed to be feminine, I could go on.

24. Cara Mason (Legend of the Seeker)

Zedd: You must never speak your mind on any subject but always defer to the opinion of your masculine betters.
Cara: There's no such thing.

Cara quickly became my favorite character on this show almost immediately after she was introduced. I loved that even when she didn't like Zedd and Kahlan, she was completely devoted to Richard and protecting and helping him. And I just loved her character arc and how she slowly becomes apart of this family and that moment when she tells Kahlan that she considers her a friend, and how she's rather prickly and that kind of stuff doesn't come naturally to her. She was just such a wonderful addition to the show, and I'm sorry we didn't get more than one season of her.

25. Caroline Forbes (The Vampire Diaries)

Caroline: I've learned to adapt. I don't need to be fixed. I can't be fixed.

Caroline was easily a character who could've just been kept 2-dimensional and kind of an antagonist for Elena, but the show fleshed her out so much, and she quickly became my favorite character on the show. And her becoming a vampire was just all the better for her as a character. I didn't love what the show did with her last season (or the fact I guess that they really didn't do much with her last season apart from her romantic interests?), but I still love her.

26. Carrie Mathison (Homeland)

Carrie: I missed something once before. I won't, I can't let that happen again.
Saul: It was ten years ago. Everyone missed something that day.
Carrie: Everyone's not me.

ughhh Carrie, all the feelings!!!!! If this list were actually ranked in terms of who's my favorite, she would've probably made the top 10. She is just stunning. She is so fully realized but also so completely flawed in so many ways. It was tough watching season 1 seeing all the mistakes she was making, but at the same time, I just loved her the more for them? I love how passionate she is about her work, and that she was actually right even if no one knows it, and how she struggles with being bipolar and oh man everything at the end of the season and just everything, she is just such an amazing character, I can't handle it. (So excited for the show to come back in a week!!!!!)

27. Casey Cartwright (Greek)

Casey: I appreciate your idealism, but you’ll learn you left black and white back in high school. It’s shades of gray from here on out. Doing the right thing isn’t always the right thing.

Casey was definitely the first character I loved on Greek, but even though I loved her right from the start, I also think her character arc is one of the greatest things? She can be kind of awful at times to people at the start of the show, and while I do like how passionate she is about being ZBZ president and is willing to do what it takes to win, she also kind of mellows out over the course of the show and grows up and realizes there are other things in life as well. I love that she has her whole life planned out, she's going to marry Evan and be ZBZ president and then be a lawyer because that's what Evan's going to do, and it becomes her dream as well, and then all her plans get turned on their side and she has to figure out what she really wants.

28. Casey Klein (Party Down)

Casey: I’m the worst so… you should be with a better person than me.

ugh, Casey is so great! She's kind of a mess, but she's just so wonderful to me. I like her trying to pursue her dreams and be a stand-up comedian and failing and having to go back to being a cater waiter and idk, I just love her.

29. Cece Meyers (New Girl)

Cece: I have two people in my phone who could kill you. Literally.

ugh, Cece!!!!! I love her so much. I love her friendship with Jess and how I never feel like Cece judges her for her awkwardness or weirdness at any point, this is just who Jess is and Cece loves her for it. I love how protective Cece is of Jess. But beyond their friendship, I also love how Cece's so tough and prickly on the outside, but she develops feelings for Schmidt and how she'd rather believe that she's just a bitch for not telling Jess about her and Schmidt and not that she didn't tell her because she actually has feelings for him, because she doesn't want to have to deal with that. I love how she's not used to opening herself up, but she does let herself open up slowly.

30. Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)

Cersei: Tears aren't a woman's only weapon. The best one's between your legs.

Oh god, Cersei, I don't even know where to start. She is just stunning to me in so many ways. She is not a great ruler, but she's also not set up to be one by the people around her. I love how ruthless she is and that she'll do anything to protect her family. I love that she uses sex as a weapon because she has no other way to get power or succeed. And then there's everything else in the books that we haven't even gotten yet, like that 2nd chapter in ADWD, but I won't get into that since I'm trying to base this list just on TV, so I'm going off what we've only seen on the show. But just, "Power is power" and "A Lannister always pays her debts" and what I quoted above. I just have so much love for her.

I finally made more progress on this list, yay! Now I'm a little under a third of the way through! I do think this is going to end up taking me like a year to get through, although I am in a picspamming mood right now, so maybe it won't take 1-2 months for the next set. Anyways, I have lots of TV and stuff to talk about, but I think I'll wait until tomorrow to get to that stuff. Hope everyone's having a nice weekend!
