New Girl

(source)

oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just. IT'S BEEN DAYS AND I AM STILL INCOHERENT ABOUT THIS. I THINK I MIGHT BE IN SHOCK STILL. You know Nick's stammering after he says "Not like this," (!!!!!!) and then he tries to explain and cover? THAT WAS WHAT MY ENTIRE BRAIN WAS FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR AFTER THE EPISODE. I mean, I saw the promo for this episode that involved everyone chanting for Nick and Jess to kiss, but I honestly never thought in a million years anything like this would happen. I figured either they wouldn't kiss and there might be an awkward moment where they laughed it off but we could tell either one or both of them didn't want to kiss the other because of feelings, or they would kiss, but they would laugh it off and pretend it meant nothing (even though it clearly would!!!!). I thought it might provide a little shippiness, but definitely nothing like we got. AND I DIDN'T GET SPOILED FOR IT BEFORE THE EPISODE AT ALL!!!!!!!! That legit almost always happens for me with my ships what with never seeing episodes live since I'm on the West Coast. But the fact that it came as that much of a surprise made it all the more enjoyable!!! Anyways, I think I've finally managed to calm down a little about it that I can talk about the episode in more than just capslock and exclamation points.

Okay, so first off, JESS IS NICK'S COOLER. I was already going to take this in a subconsciously shippy way on her part, and that was before we even got to anything later in the ep. "Did you have one long-time love? You should be with him!" OH, JESS. SHE ALSO MADE A FAKE NICK TO HANG OUT WITH BECAUSE NICK DIDN'T WANT HER AROUND BEING HIS COOLER. THAT'S A TOTALLY NORMAL THING PLATONIC FRIENDS DO. AND THEN WHEN SHE CALLS NICK WHEN SHE'S FREAKED OUT!!!!!!! She says "Nick, I need you," AND HE FUCKING COMES. HE SIGHS AND HE COMES. AND THE WAY SHE MAKES A BEELINE FOR HIM AND HUGS HIM WHEN HE SHOWS UP!!!!!! Honestly, I was completely fulfilled ship-wise by this point in the episode, BUT THINGS JUST GOT BETTER FROM THERE. And speaking of subconscious shippy stuff on Jess's part, I love that Jess is doing her best to help Nick with that girl, but when she specifically hears Nick tell the girl to throw up a 2 so they'll be put behind the wall to makeout, JESS THROWS UP A 2. Jess, you can say that you being Nick's cooler is due to "bad timing," but that was not bad timing, that was you totally subconsciously going "HEY IF I THROW UP A 2, I CAN MAKE OUT WITH NICK!" JUST SAYING.

ALL THE SCENES WHERE THEY WERE BEHIND THE WALL (in the room? WHERE WERE THEY, I DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT PART OF THE APARTMENT THAT WAS, I WAS DISTRACTED BY THE POTENTIAL OF JESS AND NICK MAKING OUT) were the ACTUAL GREATEST. In particular, them sitting on the ground against the wall, because oh man. "You'd be smoking hot." / "You do want to kiss me, then." UGHHH. I love that they're joking around, but Nick is also so very clearly into the idea of Jess finding him attractive. AND HIS HAND ON HER KNEE, AND THAT LOOK? OH MY GOD, THEIR FACES. But ugh, best of all of course was Nick refusing to kiss her by saying, "No, not like this!" BECAUSE IF THEY KISSED LIKE THIS, IT WOULDN'T BE REAL, IT WOULD JUST BE BECAUSE OF A STUPID GAME, AND IF NICK IS GOING TO KISS JESS, HE'S GOING TO DO IT FOR REAL. UGHHH. And he CLIMBS OUT OF A WINDOW to avoid having to explain to Jess what he meant by that!!!!!!!! (I'm sorry, I know I said I might be able to talk about this episode, BUT APPARENTLY THAT WAS A LIE, all I can do is flail!!!!!!)

When Sam and Jess walk over to Nick, and Sam is like "He would rather jump out a window than kiss you!" and Nick is like, "Yeah, I'm an idiot."? I DIE. Because I feel like that's where Nick decides to kiss Jess? Maybe not entirely, but just that realization that he did have a chance to kiss her and he passed it up and he regrets it because he wants nothing more than to be kissing her, and maybe he didn't even realize it fully until he said, "Not like this," but now it's out there and he's aware and he jumped out of a window instead of kissing her, and he's an idiot.

I LOVE HOW JESS CALLS OUT FOR NICK AND NOT SAM WHEN THERE'S SCRATCHING AT THE DOOR, EVEN THOUGH SAM IS ACTUALLY IN HER ROOM. Everything about that scene actually screams MARRIED to me. Just how she calls for him for help, how he tells her he'll take care of this, how when the lady is yelling at him for stealing her trenchcoat, she's just making comments like "I think he might've been sleeping in it," or whatever. IT'S WONDERFUL AND THEY ARE MARRIED.

THE KISS. JUST. WOW. I love how many times I've seen people say "I don't even watch this show/I don't even know if I ship this, but wow, that was an excellent kiss." BECAUSE YEAH, THAT WAS A DAMN AMAZING KISS, and I appreciate that that's basically universally acknowledged. (I get a little hyperbolic when I'm excited about things!!!) Everyone's already talked about all the reasons this kiss is amazing, but I'm going to repeat everyone anyways, because this is a kiss that deserves dissection. There's something I really adore about the fact that he doesn't kiss her until he returns the trenchcoat? Like. That's a weird thing to say, but it kind of goes back to what I was saying about "Not like this," because Nick doesn't want to kiss Jess when it's just for a game, he wants to kiss her for real, and it's like when he's wearing this stolen, woman's trenchcoat, he's not Nick, he's Trenchcoat Nick. But the second it's off, he's earnestly kissing her, because then it can be real. And man, I LOVE that he whirls her around to kiss her (it reminds me of Veronica and Logan's first kiss on Veronica Mars, which is also one of my favorite kisses of all time), and how there's no hesitation on either of their parts. He's not tentative, and she doesn't hesitate to kiss back, they just start going at it. And after they stop, how he kisses her twice, gently, because even though he knows they can't take it any further, that he has to stop, he can't stop kissing her. And "I meant something like that." !!!!!!!! His VOICE right there, god!!!!!! Nick is not often incredibly serious, so hearing him so serious there pretty much killed me. And I love that there's no music during the kiss, just the sound of their breathing and their mouths, it's just. ugh everything about that kiss is utter perfection, I can't handle it. I was literally crying after this episode, like, not even crying from happiness, but from inability to handle all these emotions so water was spilling out of my eyes. And then I rewatched the episode immediately afterwards. And then I rewatched the last 5 min 10 more times.

So what I want now (and also what I think is the most likely route the show will go) is that Nick and Jess are super awkward in the next episode trying to figure out what the kiss meant, and by the end Jess tells Nick she just wants to be friends because she doesn't want to screw up their friendship/the apartment dynamic, and she also really likes Sam and wants to make that work, and Nick's unhappy but accepts it. And from there, I'm not sure exactly what I think will happen, but what I want to happen is that they try to go back to normal, but obviously there are still lingering feelings and awkwardness and ~moments and moony faces, and then in the finale something happens, like maybe Nick makes a grand gesture or Jess realizes that she's in love with him or something, so they decide to pursue something, but either Winston and Schmidt have already told them they're against them getting together because they don't want the apartment dynamic screwed up, or Jess and Nick decide independently from Winston and Schmidt that they don't want to screw up the apartment dynamic, so they decide to secretly date (for new friends/old friends who have forgotten, SECRET DATING IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TROPES, BASICALLY ANY TIME I TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW I WANT ONE OF MY SHIPS TO GET TOGETHER, IT INVOLVES SECRET DATING, I AM SHAMELESS), and maybe they'll start off more like friends with benefits (IN SECRET, of course), but maybe not because that's reminding me a little too much of Schmidt/Cece. And then Winston and Schmidt find out sometime during season 3 and… idk what happens from there, I don't really care at that point. I JUST WANT SECRET DATING. I've also seen a lot of people say they liked the kiss but feel sad for Sam and don't want anything to ruin that, and like… I mean, I enjoy Sam, he and Jess are cute together, but they were never going to be an endgame couple, and I was never especially invested in them or his character, so. I can't really get too upset about them potentially being over? But I really don't think they will be, I'm pretty sure Jess will want to stick with Sam for at least a little while longer.

Anyways, I guess other things also happened besides Nick/Jess in this episode that I should talk about. LIKE WINSTON/BRENDA SONG!!!!!!! I can't even remember the first thing I saw her in, but it was when I was a child and it was something on Disney or Nick (not The Suite Life, though, that was after my Disney-watching time), and I've always enjoyed seeing her pop up places since then. I pretty much figured that she was faking the engagement, and I'm glad that was the case, since they were super cute together!!! All of Winston's stuff was hilarious, particularly "Come on girl, what your name is? What that thang do?" I really enjoyed them together, so I'm hoping she sticks around for awhile (and that the show doesn't let me down with them like it did with Winston/Shelby).

I'm still incredibly frustrated with how the show has been dealing with Schmidt/Cece this season, but I did have a split second of feelings when she told him she would always love him to help him get the girl (…even though she really doesn't owe him anything, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE SHOW IS DOING WITH THEM THIS SEASON AT ALL. ugh). Cece's date storyline was kind of given the short shrift, but I did enjoy the dude, and "This is the most elaborate way to get out of dating me I have ever experienced!" cracked me up quite a bit. I kind of want her to like convince him to go out on more dates with her, but every single time they go out, something crazy like this happens, so he's constantly like "IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DATE ME, JUST SAY SO, YOU DON'T NEED ALL THESE ELABORATE SCHEMES."

And apart from all the individual storylines, I really just enjoyed the episode overall! I love when they're all hanging out in the apartment together! AND THE RETURN OF TRUE AMERICANS!!!!!!!!!! UGH SO GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I missed it on my first watch, but on my 2nd time through the episode, I caught Schmidt yelling, "It's Abu Nazir!!!!" during the game, and I just about died. I also utterly adored Schmidt fainting while seeing Nick on the ledge, AND THEN BOTH WINSTON AND SCHMIDT SITTING HIM DOWN AFTERWARDS AND TELLING HIM THEY WILL TALK ABOUT THIS TOMORROW LIKE CONCERNED PARENTS. They're so genuinely worried about him!!!!!!! I love it.

Anyways, I've been meaning to buy season 1 of this show on DVD forever, and I was going to ask for it for Christmas, and then for my birthday, but… I kind of forgot? But this episode spurred me to buy it immediately. And I bought it Tuesday at liek 11 PM and did 3-5 day shipping because I'm cheap, so I figured I wouldn't get it until next week, but then it arrived Thursday, so now I guess I'm going to do a rewatch of both seasons over the weekend, even though I'm behind on all the shows, and have only watched 1 film all year and really need to get caught up on Oscar nominated stuff, and am below pace for my reading goals for the year. BUT IT'S OUT OF MY CONTROL, THE 3-5 DAY SHIPPING ONLY TOOK 1 DAY, IT'S CLEARLY FATE THAT I DO A REWATCH. So that's happening.

Hart of Dixie
ugh, Zoe and Wade continue to be the cutest!!!!! I was a little annoyed at Wade for lying to Zoe because he didn't want her taking care of him, since I was hoping he was lying to her because he came back to town because he missed her and wanted to be with her, but then he was horribly sick and knew he couldn't face her without her being like "I told you so!!!" but then that wasn't the case. But I was glad that it resulted in her telling him she missed him (!!!!!!!! AWWWWW) and telling him, "Guess what, Dumb-Dumb, you're doing it wrong!" (WHY IS IT SO CUTE TO ME WHEN SHE INSULTS HIM AND CALLS HIM NAMES???) And then at the end, when she gets sick, and he comes to take care of her!!!!!!!!! And "Do you have crackers?" / "Of course I do! Now, I don't have as many as I HAD, I got hungry waiting for you…" SUPER CUTE. They're just delightful. My only issue is that I'm constantly on edge watching their scenes because I'm certain that the other shoe is going to drop any minute and the show's going to start the path towards their destruction.

LEMON WAS SUPER CUTE IN THIS EPISODE. And I also adored all her scenes with Annabeth, and "Lemon, every one of your choices is wrong." AND HER YELLING AT GEORGE!!! "The freedom of movement!" / "Mr. Mayor, if I will, that one is actually not in the Bill of Rights--" / "WAS I TALKING TO YOU?" AND HE SITS RIGHT BACK DOWN. Lavon and Annabeth were also cute together, and that was a good kiss, but I'm just too nervous about the fallout when Lemon finds out. The thing is, even if they tell Lemon and she says she's okay, there's no way she's going to be completely okay, and it's going to affect her relationships with both of them, and that's going to make me sad, ugh. But I guess I'll wait to see how the storyline plays out.

The Mindy Project
I TOTALLY DID NOT KNOW THIS WAS B.J.'S FIRST EPISODE UNTIL LIKE A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE I WATCHED IT. ugh, it was so exciting seeing him!!!! I kind of wish they had done a little more with him, though, but he is in next week's episode, too, so that should help. WE JUST BETTER GET TO SEE THEM KISS AT SOME POINT IN THE NEXT EPISODE AT LEAST, OK???? (I am not a creepy person, shut up.) But man, if this episode was supposed to convince me that BJ and Mindy are totally just platonic friends and everyone else is crazy for thinking they're dating, it was not at all successful, because I feel like there's no way this storyline on the show can go other than Jaime realizing that he is in love with his best friend (…Lucy? I think was her name?), so. I'm just saying. You guys would also be more convincing if you didn't keep writing roles where you're dating.

Anyways. A couple other random things: I enjoyed that Danny was still referring to his girlfriend as Eyepatch to everyone at the beginning of the episode. I LOVED that Mindy was talking to Danny about his break up, like… HE WANTED TO DISCUSS THIS WITH HER. They've actually come a long way since the pilot!!!!!! I was super frustrated with the introduction of Mindy's new college friend, because if you're going to include a friend of Mindy's who doesn't work at the hospital, WHY WOULDN'T YOU JUST HAVE ANNA CAMP ON THE SHOW????? THE CHARACTER EVEN HAD A BROKEN LIMB!!!!!!!! THIS DOESN'T ACTUALLY MAKE ANY SENSE. ugh.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Man, a lot has happened over the past few days!!!

[-] THURSDAY'S VIDEO!!!!!!! Not quite as flail-inducing for me as Monday's (which is probably my favorite video ever now for this series), but still a lot of wonderful things. I JUST LOVE HOW HE SITS DOWN COMFORTABLY AND CASUALLY TO BE IN HER VIDEOS NOW. EVEN WHEN HE'S ASKING HER OUT ON A DATE. I mean, I guess he probably figures it can hardly go as badly as the last time he declared his feelings, so why not! It's just so cute how she beams at him when he comes in, and how they say good afternoon to each other, and how she checks him out when he sits down!!!!! And I died when he was like "Well, hopefully it will be a good day… too," BECAUSE HOPEFULLY YOU WILL AGREE TO GO OUT ON A DATE WITH HIM, LIZZIE. And ughhh their faces are the best there. I totally believe that she would've agreed to go out with him, just the two of them (and then subsequently would've freaked out about if this was a date and if she wanted it to be a date and what it all meant), but I'm actually glad that they didn't have her answer, since… I mean, Darcy's supposed to have some hope, but he's supposed to still be pretty uncertain if Lizzie's feelings have changed towards him. I feel like if she had said yes, he would obviously have much greater reason to believe she does have feelings for him, and then whatever he does to help with the Lydia/Wickham situation wouldn't be as… great as it is in the book? Because he helps out without any real hope of being able to ~win her back or any reward or anything, and I wouldn't want to feel at all like he was helping just because she said yes to a date with him. If that makes any sense. Anyways, there was also touching!!!!!!!!!!! Which everyone has already flailed about, but it definitely bears repeating. AND THE WAY HE WAS LEANING OVER TO LOOK HER IN THE EYE AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG AND CALM HER DOWN, UGHHHH. And how she stops him from leaving the room and tells him thank you!!!!!! SO PERFECT.

[-] I'm… not really sure how I feel about the sex tape being the modern equivalent of the Lydia/Wickham thing in the book. I mean… idk, I've never had any really strong feelings for how this storyline should be adapted, I was always just waiting to see what they would do with it, so I could really be persuaded either way. I do think it's one of the better modern equivalents for the type of societal shame that the Lydia/Wickham story in the book would've resulted in, though.

[-] I was holding off judgment on the Lydia videos were a mistake to air during the Wickham drama, but I think I'm finally at the point where I'm ready to agree they were a complete mistake. Everyone's already discussed the massive social media fail during the emergency Lydia stuff on Wednesday, so I don't really need to get into it. But if the show had just had Lydia not posting all these videos about her and Wickham, then everything would've worked so much better. We wouldn't have had to wonder why Jane and Charlotte weren't noticing anything about what Lydia was doing or telling Lizzie, and the show wouldn't have had to come up with these contrived reasons of Charlotte being on a month-long internet-less retreat and Jane just being really, REALLY busy. Lydia and George could've started following each other on Twitter as a cue to us, but that would be something the characters might not notice, and Lydia could cryptically tweet every once and awhile about the guy in her life or whatever, and we could know what it was about, but no one else in-universe would. And they could still reveal the sex tape.

I also don't really get what the purpose was of having this like… communication fail on Wednesday so that Charlotte is tweeting Lizzie "Emergency!!!" and calling her multiple times while Lizzie's phone is broken until she's able to get her new one activated. Like… I'm a little confused about the timeline, I guess; was the video supposed to be shot on Wednesday or Thursday? Was Charlotte calling Lizzie straight for like a day without actually contacting Pemberley Digital/Darcy (I'm sure she would be able to get his contact info through Collins)/anyone else at all, or was she frantically trying to reach Lizzie over the course of like an hour on Wednesday until her phone got activated (meaning that the video was shot on Wednesday)? Because the latter is not as bad as it seemed on Wednesday from the initial tweets, like… that works fine for me that she's shooting on Wednesday even if it's posted on Thursday. I mean, the show has totally done stuff like that in the past, so… I don't see why they couldn't do that here? Lizzie could reference shooting the video on Wednesday afternoon because she wouldn't have time on Thursday. I just… don't get why they needed to bother with Charlotte's tweets or the broken phone at all. What should've happened is that Darcy should've asked Lizzie to the theater, the phone should've rang, Darcy would be like "Do you need to get that?" and Lizzie would be like "No, it's Charlotte, I'll just call her back in a minute. Sure, I'd love to go with you and Gigi!" and then Darcy would explain it would just be him and Lizzie, and then Charlotte would text "EMERGENCY, ANSWER YOUR PHONE, IT'S ABOUT LYDIA AND WICKHAM!!!!!!!" or whatever and then call right back, and Lizzie would be like, "omg, I'm sorry, I have to get this!" and then the rest would play out the same. Like, is there a legitimate reason that wouldn't work and they actually needed to go with the social media fail they went with on Wednesday??? I just don't get it.

[-] Anyways, I'm super excited for the Gigi videos, at least. I mean, everyone's already pointed out that they are not actually the best app demo videos, but this is the kind of contrivance that I can ignore, you know? The Lydia-related stuff has been hard to ignore because it's been kind of horribly handled and executed and isn't enjoyable to watch, but if some contrivance with Gigi's videos lets us see more Darcy and his involvement with the Wickham stuff (and possibly candid Lizzie/Darcy moments, and makeouts! I MEAN, COME ON, WHAT EVEN IS THE POINT OF AN APP THAT AUTOMATICALLY EDITS AND UPLOADS VIDEOS ITSELF IF WE DON'T GET SOME ACCIDENTALLY UPLOADED MAKEOUTS AT SOME POINT?????), then I can totally look past it. And I always enjoy seeing more of Gigi's face!!!! And, of course, Darcy's. I adored how exhausted they made him look in yesterday's episode; I totally believe that he was working all day and night to figure out how to help Lizzie. AND THAT HE JUST DROPPED EVERYTHING AT WORK TO FIGURE OUT A WAY TO HELP LIZZIE. I love that his list of priorities is basically: 1) Gigi, 2) Lizzie, 3) Everything else.

I am still behind on most TV, but I did manage to catch up on Bunheads, which was a great choice because that is a super delightful show, and I forgot how much I enjoyed it! I think it might be even better so far since it's come back than it was over the summer. I also really enjoyed seeing Paris Gellar again on my screen, and the Breaking Bad reference ("So he's a Better Call Saul?") had me cracking up a ridiculous amount.

I finally read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, which I feel like everyone in the world has already read, and… I liked it, but not nearly as much as most people seem to? I should mention that I was spoiled for how everything turned out like months and months ago, which was part of why I put off reading it for so long, so that might've lessened the emotional impact some. But I was expecting to cry a lot, and… I almost teared up like once or twice, but that was it. I honestly just never got incredibly emotionally invested in the characters or the relationship or… anything. The characters never really felt like real people to me. idk. I did really enjoy quite a lot about it! I gave it like 4/5 stars on GoodReads, so it's not like I hated it or anything. It just didn't seem to affect me like it did most people, which is kind of disappointing.

Nothing particularly exceptional about my job to complain about this week. I mean, there were plenty of frustrating things, but nothing remarkable enough to get into. I was just so exhausted by Wednesday that I just felt like a truck had run over me, and I was kind of emotionally on edge all Wednesday and Thursday, not for any particular reason, but just like… a lot of small things catching up with me? And I think I was still a little exhausted from last week. BUT IT'S THE WEEKEND NOW, YAY!!!!! Going to catch up on commenting because I'm days behind (for the aforementioned reasons of being emotionally on edge and exhausted the past couple days), and then I will embark upon my New Girl rewatch!!!!!
