I'm back from WorldCon, and it was wonderful, as it always is (or at least as it has been the previous 2 times I've gone)!!! And now I'm super bummed that it's over. But anyways, I'm going to do a very detailed, long recap of my experience mostly just for myself and so I can look back in the future and remember everything, so if you don't want to ( Read more... )

So glad you had such a great time at WorldCon! :D

Good luck with getting into the linear algebra class- keeping my fingers crossed that that will go well!

Thank you!!! It was such a great time! :D

I have no reason to believe I won't be able to get into the linear algebra class, but I'm sure that won't stop me from stressing about it to a ridiculous degree over the next month, so thank you, I appreciate that!!!

That's awesome that you feel the same way about urban fantasy! I feel like the TV shows that really introduced me to fandom (Charmed, Buffy, etc.) were basically the TV equivalent of urban fantasy, so it probably shouldn't surprise me that that's where I've gravitated towards in my reading as well. I had actually been reading a lot more like contemporary romance type stuff recently and not as much fantasy, and I think going to WorldCon really reawakened that love for me and reminded me of why I love it as a genre so much.

haha, I know! Well, it was a surprise to see an attractive male my age on a panel!!! I couldn't help it.

Thank you!!! It really was a great time.

Ugh, IKR, feminism is not limited to a certain time period. My god, you can even go back to fucking Antigone, which is a feminist work written in like 400 B.C.!!! I mean, of course that wasn't the norm, and I do agree that things should be studied in context, but at the same time it's not an excuse to just ignore issues.

Going onto the female Doctor subject, though, I'm a little uneasy about my opinion. Of course I would never be against a female Doctor, but I also feel like it isn't something that I need? Or even particularly want? I mean, I would love to follow the adventures of a female Time Lord, but as the Doctor I'm not sure it works for me? Like, it would be different if switching sexes was something that was a part of the canon from the beginning (like on Avatar/Korra), but it's just . . . all we really have is one throwaway joke by Neil Gaiman about the Corsair switching sexes between regenerations. But maybe that's just the Corsair because the Corsair was transgendered or something! I acknowledge that sex/gender is fluid in ( ... )

Exactly!!! I mean, I am going to be a little more forgiving of sexist/racist/etc. stuff from 50 years ago or ever further back, but it's definitely no excuse considering how so many works from that era do manage to be feminist or, at the very least, not offensive in the same way ( ... )

Yeah, I have seen a number of people who are really sexist about the idea of a female Doctor - including one person specifically who said it would "RUIN THE SHOW." Like, wtf?? I'm obviously not one of those people. But, yeah, I can't really help thinking about it in terms of the Doctor's own identification as a character, so it brings up other issues for me. Also, if it were to happen, would it be something that would actually stick? Or would it be some sort of one-off experiment, like when a teen girl character has a lesbian fling for sweeps before going back to boys for the rest of the series ( ... )

ugh, yeah, exactly! And I've also seen complaints about the idea of a female Doctor basically boiling down to the idea that a female Doctor would automatically be lesser or wouldn't be The Doctor because she would be female, pretty much solely based on stereotypical ideas of how women behave/act. So that's all just super frustrating. But yeah, while I really would like to see a female Doctor, I would be worried about how the show would handle it. It's hard to know since I don't think the Doctor's ever really expressed any feelings as to his gender identity (unless you assume he does have control over his regenerations and has chosen to regenerate into a male each time, which is entirely possible). But who's to say Timelords even care? I mean, while I definitely identify as a female and have no desire to change that, if I were a 900+ year old Timelord and knew I could regenerate back into being a female at some point, I might try being a male for a regeneration just to try something different. So who knows? But I definitely ( ... )
