I saw Rent again today.

It made me realize how much the play sucks placed out of the stage.
At least for me. The characters become empty shells.

Insert long rant here:

The only reason I liked the movie is because I've seen the play... it reminds me of what a moving work the musical on stage was for me. I regret the spoken moments in the movie. One of the reason I love it on stage so much is that I feel these people live in art. They are young, lost souls who feel something missing in their lives. For once, they felt "connection in an isolating age." Was anything isolating in the movie? No one fucking seemed isolated. A lot of sadness was taken out.

And how god damn annoying was Columbus's butchering of Collins and Angel meeting? "It's a meeting for people with aids, like me" "me too".

WTF. In the original song there's a sense of hope when Collins meets Angel in his state of distress, and some light-hearted humor in them both having aids. In the movie it’s like: Awesome, we’ve both got aids. Collins doesn’t even return to his friends until the next morning? Shows how quickly he loved Angel and how much he really doesn’t miss his friends. And Angel needs to hurry to a life support meeting? That’s on the next day? That makes sense? Her mentioning the meeting doesn’t really make sense when she suddenly meets a stranger, unless she plans on hurrying to the meeting, as she does in the musical on stage.

And I don't like how they don't specify how April died. It does away with the hopelessness and grittiness of "One Song Glory." The song is his protest to the way April died. She had an "empty life" "time dies" all that good stuff.. and it's not there in the film. Oh, she just died from aids. Ho hum. "Time flies and then no need to endure anymore." Roger's song doesn't seem nearly as desperate without knowing how he discovered he had aids and how April died. How he feels he's enduring because his girlfriend with aids just decided to give up and kill herself.

Leaving out the voice mail that develops Joanne's character is bad. How are we supposed to know she wears doc martens and no dresses? And further development from her gets left out in taking away "happy new year", where Maureen begs her to take her back, and Joanne says (jokes?) that she's a wench. Joanne doesn't seem as strong a character in the movie.

And, the song "another day" is supposed to have tension. Roger and Mimi are supposed to be in the same room for the song. They are tense, pissed off and screaming at each other. In the movie Mimi just runs out. And why does Roger continue screaming at her once she's gone? Mimi is headstrong and foolish. She's 19, addicted, has AIDS. Her message of "living for today" that she's learned from all of that isn't strong when she just runs out.

The stripper club is supposed to be seedy. Did it look seedy? No. Damn that girl seems to be living a good life. Strippers aren't automatically seedy. The place they strip at is what makes their situation desperate.

Taking out Christmas Bells (from my personal opinion) takes out a large sense of MUSIC. These people love art, life, depression, masochism, and rhythm. This gives them a sense of connection, of a life they all live together, how they all hold on to each other in times of crisis and how they have come together despite living in Alphabet City. In Christmas Bells they all sing, overlapping each other, and I sense that they are all connected. The drug dealers, the addicts, the AIDS infected, the idiots, the bums, everyone. They are all searching to fill something missing in their hearts, and they just go about it in different ways.

Over the moon was overdone. What the fuck? I really don't like what how they shot that, but that's probably just all personal preference. I think the only reason that segment works on stage is because of audience participation.

You can't tell Roger is ignoring Mimi in the film's La Vie Boheme. Her accusing him at the end of the song feels very misplaced. Part of this is because you don't get the whole "take it slow" line from "christmas bells". Also, they make Bennie and Mimi's relationship seem very abrupt and sudden by taking his portion out of "la vie boheme."

"Happy New Year B" helps emphasize the relationship between Mimi, Bennie, and Roger. Taking it out is bad. Simple. We don't understand to what extreme Roger wants to detach himself from mimi, Mimi's past relationship with bennie, or Mimi's desperateness which leads her to hook up with some guy at the end for Smack.

I like what they did with "without you". Collins was a super pot head in the movie. Just made him seem a little more loserish that I remember him.

Not that I don't like pot. I love pot. It's just I don't know many ambitious burn-out potheads. That's why we call them burnouts. It looked like he was happy just because of all the pot he smoked. That was his escape. Not that I mind. For reason previously stated.

I really don't like seeing Roger climbing mountains in Santa Fe. Why the hell did he go back to NY after that? And it seemed like a bad music video. Mark's loneliness from being surrounded by people in relationships and not having one himself isn't in the movie with the removal of "Halloween." He just doesn't seem sad. His nostalgia on the past year helps explain the rollercoaster events between him and his friends.

"Goodbye Love"-- They took out Roger and Mark screaming at each other. A lot of criticism about the movie stems from the characters in this movie getting what they deserve. They all seem to be worthless nobodies. They should pay their rent. Don't pay-- get kicked out. makes a ton of sense. In the original Roger and Mark criticize each other. They get mad. Mad = good. It means they aren't ignorant to the fact they aren't going anywhere in life.

There. That's it. Yes, that was very ranting. But I felt the need.

Victor's condo was fun last night. Luke's birthday thing was fun on Friday. I got to eat Potato Pancakes this morning. They were yummy.

I hated Thanksgiving. I do not wish to comment on it at this moment. I sincerely hope every one had a much better time than me.

My deck/dock is being fixed. Our dock flew off during the hurricane, and the pilings supporting the deck were rotting... so taking care of that was a very good idea.

I smiled a lot today.
