My grandmother made a wonderful pumpkin bread. My brother and I were addicted to it. Dark colored and heavy, but light in texture, walnuts in a small enough amount they didn't bug me but enough that it gave the bread a different feel, hints of spices I didn't know the names of swirling around through it all ( Read more... )

My mother had the same experience with a recipe of my great-grandmother's. One day Mom sat in the kitchen and watched Elte Bubie make whatever it was. She figured out the secret when EB pulled a huge wooden spoon off the wall to add something - that was Bubie's "spoonful"!
