Food collection

Nov 14, 2008 15:41

The company I contract for has put out their usual food collection barrels out. I was dismayed to see that not only was there NO food in there, there was quite a large amount of garbage from people using them as trash bins. I know that times are tough but it is times like these when giving is most important. Let me close by echoing these two quotes ( Read more... )

I dunno. A Barbara Bush quote on charity is something akin to an Idi Amin quote on human rights.

She may not be the paragon of charity granted, but she has done charitable work for the Katrina Relief Fund. But even if she were the 'do as I say, not as I do' type, would it make her words any less true?

Funny that you posted this, our company is doing this too, and I just put a ton of canned goodies in this morning and YES, giving DOES make me feel good!

No garbage here at our company. People REALLY should read what the barrels are for. Especially THIS year. It is going to be a very, very bad year for some families.

Please, help if you can. Even if you can only donate $5 or $10 (think about it, its the price of a SINGLE LUNCH) for Second Harvest it is a BUNCH of fresh fruit or veggies or even meat. They can buy in bulk.

People can't give what they don't have. I'm not sure what wages are in your company, but I work in finance and see the results of the credit crunch. Even people with decent incomes are having problems. When property values were increasing and credit was so easy to get and interest rates were very very low, so they had money to spare after their payments. Rates are still low, but even the 2-3% increase that banks are now offering to these people who are now renewing their mortgages, really eats a bigger chunk of their income, and they just don't have the extra funds to share around.

I feel the crunch too, but what's a few cans of food? The price of a meal, a pack of cigarettes?

Last night we talked about how the new expansion to World of Warcraft just sold 11 million copies in one day. ONE DAY! That's 550 million dollars! I can't believe that there is no room for charity in a country that spends THAT much money on trivialities, but doesn't take care of their fellow human beings.

And using the barrels as trash bins... that's just adding insult to injury.

oh, I totally agree. Society has very much become far too dependent on the luxuries, to the point, I'm sure a lot of those expansion packs were bought on credit card, and money those people don't even have......

It is sad when people feel they MUST have that new game, but can't toss a $0.99 can of soup in for the food bank. Using the bins for garbage is just bad.

"Lidl Sweden has been informed that cleaning liquids have been poured into the trash to stop trespassers from stealing garbage at one of our stores during a short time period," Mathias Kivikoski, Lidl's chief executive in Sweden, said in a statement.
