The inappropriate wedding

Dec 21, 2009 23:40

Penny took a deep breath. She was getting married. Her. With Marc, who was, without a doubt, the perfect guy for her. She thought about Leonard, who got back with Stephanie and seemed truly happy. When she announced him she was engaged, he jumped of joy, hugged her and congrated her, even though a part of him still wished they worked out together. But it was better that way. Besides, she met Marc because of her break-up. And getting married gave Leonard ideas and Stephanie seemed up for it (thanks to Penny's subtle hints). She smiled to herself in her wedding-dress. She bought it yesterday for the marriage which was in two weeks. Two freakin' weeks. She sat down on her couch, wishing someone would be on her side right now. She had made a deal with Marc, telling him it was bad luck to see the girl in the white dress and wanting to wait until the wedding. He was in New York with his parents and Penny felt lonely all of a sudden. She wanted to call anyone, including Howard but he was probably making out or doing it with Bernadette. Then she thought about the only person who didn't look so happy about her getting married. He nevrotic neighbor across the hall, Doctor Sheldon Cooper. She fought back the tears starting to fall on her cheeks and stood, ready to face the man. She marched across the hall and burst into the apartment. She found him sitting at his desk, typing vehemently on his computer. He faced her quickly, surprised by her sudden appearance but she saw his eyes widening at the view of her dress. If she didn't know him better, she'd say his jaw just dropped.

"Penny, may I ask why you enter in the apartment like a wild animal, in your wedding-dress?"
"No, I'm the one who asks questions today Sheldon!"

He was taken aback by the tone of her voice and she was glad for that. He stiffened a little in his chair and she took a step closer. His eyes were so blue, she thought, realizing that for the first time. But kind of grey too. Wow, his eyes were gorgeous. No, focus, Penelope, you're not here for that.

"May I ask why you're not supportive?"

Sheldon bit his lower lip, clearly considering if he should speak or not.

"To what are you referring to?" he finally said, looking anxious and scared.
"Oh, I don't know, what happens in two weeks? My wedding Sheldon! My freaking wedding! Everyone is supportive, happy for me but you! I know you're not good for social relations but this is me we're talking about! And I need you to be there for me! Because, I'm getting married in two weeks!"

Too late for the tears. Which made Sheldon look even more confused. She knew Marc for almost two years. It was too soon to get married. He told her when she said she was engaged. He told her from the beginning. When she broke up with Leonard, he thought it was over. That she won't have other dommed relationships. Marc wasn't right for her, he knew it. He couldn't explain why, but deep down, he was sure of it. But she needed him. He couldn't...what? What was he feeling? He couldn't put his finger on why he was bothered.

"Penny, I don't want you to be crushed. I'm sure Marc is a reliable guy, but I'm telling you what I've been telling you for almost two years. This is way too soon"-Penny rolled her eyes- "and I still think you deserve better. He wants you to live in New York with him. I don't want you to leave Penny"

He surprised himself as the words came out of his mouth. It was true though. But the issue remained: why was he feeling rejected? Why was he so bothered by the fact that she was getting married? And she looked surprised too.

"You...don't want me to leave? Sheldon, sweetie, I'm going to miss you so much too, but this is only fair for him. All of his family is there"
"But your carreer is here. Your friends are here"

He wanted to shut his mouth but couldn't help it. He was finally telling her the words he was dying to tell for so long.

"My career is a dead-end and I know it. And who knows, New York has Broadway! This could be huge! And you guys will come visit me whenever you want and I will come visit you as much as I can"
"But it won't be the same!"

He had stood, facing her entirely now, his gaze a little too intense. She shivered, though she wasn't sure why.

"I know you don't like change sweetie but.."
"This has nothing to do with change!"

And here was the Southern accent she loved so much. She never saw him so upset.

"You won't be across the hall anymore, I'm going to miss you and I can't focus on my papers because of your so-called wedding and I feel...I feel..."
"Sheldon, what do you feel?"

She was sobbing now. She placed a hand on his right arm. He stared at it for a few seconds then he sighed heavily.

"Penny, don't...don't go"

She was crying now. He was so sweet right now. She hugged him tightly and much to her surprise, he hugged her back.

"Sheldon, I know you'll find it arguable but I feel like I taught you so much over the past few years. You grew up. You're hugging me"
Her head was resting on his chest and her words were like whispers.
"You did teach me a lot Penny. I feel like I taught you things too. I mean, it's obviou, but you learnt. I always admired you for that. Please don't leave. It won't be the same without you"
"Oh Sheldon, I have to leave. It will be hard at first but you'll do fine. Come on Dr Cooper, you'll win the Nobel Prize before I'll have time to unpack!"
"I know I'll win the Nobel Prize Penny, but you won't be here to celebrate"

She broke the hug and looked up at him. His eyes were watery. She bit her lip.  If he only knew how much he meant to her, how much it was important to have him with her in her life, how much she'll miss him...

"I have to call Marc, it's our break time" she said, giving him a weak smile. He let go of her and looked deeply into her eyes.
"Penny, I don't know why I'll tell you what I'm about to tell you..."
"What is it? Anything sweetie"

He took a deep breath.

"Don't get married"

She scoffed. Anything but that.

"Excuse me? What do you mean, don't get married? The marriage is in two weeks Sheldon! Don't do this to me!"
"Tell me you love him with all your heart"
"No! You know what, you don't even know what love is!"
"I know what it is when I see you Penny"

It litteraly took her breath away. And his too. There it was, right in front of him. How could something that simple escaped from him? He was supposed to solve every issues he encountered. But when it came to Penny, his brain was not working the usual amount.

"Two weeks Sheldon. You can't do that. Marc is great and I'm happy. I want my best friend, one of my best friends with me. If you can't, then maybe you shouldn't come at all"
She reconsidered her own words.
"I'm sorry, I want you to be there. Promise you'll be there"
"You're still getting married?"
"Yes! Sheldon, what do you want?"

With that he bend over and kissed her with utter passion. She started to fight back but gave in, lost in the kiss and the fact it was Sheldon. She broke apart, tears rolling all over her face, looking at him with desperation.

"It's too late Sheldon, I'm sorry...I can't...I have to call him"
"Penny, once it's done, don't expect me to congratulate you. I want you to be happy, don't get me wrong but I can't lie. If I come, I might interject"

She hit his shoulder, crying out loud then kissed him again before returning to her apartment in tears, feeling even more lonely than before. She didn't want to call Marc. All she could think about was Sheldon. Then she realized he was all she could think about, really only him, even before what just happened. Too late. She couldn't do this to Marc. The thing with Sheldon was weird because it didn't feel weird. She took off her dress, poured herself a glass of vodka, still sobbing. Two weeks and she'll be gone. Two weeks and it'll be all over.

TBC...(if you want me to) ;)
