The inappropriate wedding 2/?

Penny was wrong. Because the next morning, she woke up in her couch, her face wet and her eyes red. She hadn't called Marc. She had just broke the routine they had. What would Sheldon say? Sheldon...She sighed heavily, remembering what had happened last night. He told her not to get married, told her not to go. She poured herself some coffee and didn't find courage to put on some clothes over her underwear. She stared at her door then took the decision to march over there and confront Sheldon once more. She didn't knock on the door and burst into the living-room, experiencing a bad déjà-vu. Leonard and Sheldon were talking over the kitchen island and stopped dead at the view of Penny.

"Sheldon, what the hell?"

Leonard glanced anxiously between the two, clearly considering what to do. He waved at Penny then went back into his room. Sheldon looked down at Penny.

"Penny, you're in your underwear" he stated calmly.
"Have you recently suffered a blow to the head? What..."

Then she noticed the bags on the floor. She looked up at him, desperation and anger in her face.

"What are those?" she asked, taking a step closer, trying to fight back the tears.
"I believe those are my bags. Mines, to be more accurate"
"Why do you have bags?"
"I'm heading to Texas" he replied simply, giving her a shrug of his shoulder.

Oh no, she thought, anger taking advantage, he couldn't just run away.

"So that's it then? Anytime you have issues, you go and find your mamma? That's not how it works! You can't kiss me, pretend nothing happened and abandon me two weeks before my wedding!"
"I'm sorry Penny, as I told you, I won't be a part of this...wedding. I'd rather leave before I'm in trouble. I don't want to mess up with your life"
"Well guess what Dr Cooper, you already did! I need you to be there, you're the best man in my mind. I want you to come, I...Oh God Sheldon, why do make everything so damn complicated?"

She lost it. The tears were rolling down her cheeks. Sheldon grabbed her hands in his and looked deeply into her eyes.

"Penny, I'm a phycisit. I can't stay and compromise my entire career for something I don't even understand. That is what baffles me. I'm not supposed to feel that way, for some people I'm not supposed to feel at all but your presence in my life for all these years changed me, made me understand the basic of relationships. For that I thank you. I may not be there on your great day, the one you think will be the happiest day of your life, but I can't stay here and pretending I'm fine. So I'm going to Texas, and not to my mom's, might I add"

Penny was lost. She stood on her tip-toes and gave him a peek on his cheek. But then she stopped breathing, closing her eyes and made all the way to his lips. She put her hands tentatively around his neck, shy as she did so, and opened her mouth in his. It was a goodbye, she knew it but it was something else. She sensed Sheldon tense a little but after a few seconds he responded to her desperate kiss. She was crying, wanting to tell him not to go, that she didn't want to do this without him. Then don't, said a voice inside her head. No, she couldn't do that to Marc. They broke apart and sighed at the same time, their eyes still closed.

"Goodbye Penny, I sincerely wish you a life of happiness. I hope you know what you do"

Penny grabbed his arms and opened her mouth in protest but he put a finger on her lips.

"Don't say anything if you don't mean them Penny"
"I...promise you'll call me when you get there. Have a safe trip"

He gave her a genuine but weak smile and called out Leonard.

"Coming! Just a second!"
"I will call you Penny. I feel like it's the social protocol for me to apologize for not coming on your special day"
"What am I gonna do without you?" she breathed out. She felt like she'll never stop crying. "I want to see those big blue eyes looking at me while I walk through the aisle. Sheldon, you're everything to me. I should have...there are so much things..."
"I'm not dying Penny, I'll be in Texas, you don't need to get so nostalgic and sentimental"

She giggled because it was so Sheldon.

"Ok, ready!" Leonard called out, coming out of his bedroom, looking anxious. "Is everything okay?"

Penny didn't even glance at him, her mind focused on Sheldon.

"I love you" she said without a sound. He nodded solemnly and asked Leonard to come.
"See you later Penny!"
"Yeah...Later Leonard"

She turned to Sheldon, standing in the hall, casting a glance at the apartment.

"I'm going to miss it. But I'll come back in three weeks. Goodbye Penny, make sure no one sits in my spot. That's no reason for the guys to think they're free to sit wherever they want"
"Understood. Can I sit in your spot?"

He scoffed.

"You always sit in my spot. An other thing that baffles me"
"It feels good on this side of the couch"
"That's why it's my spot. And nobody can be in my room while I'm gone"
"Gotcha. Bye Sheldon"
"Sheldon, we'll be late for the airport" Leonard said a little out of the blue, not wanting to interrupt.
"Oh dear Lord, you're right! Bye Penny, have a good marriage"
"Thank you Sheldon"
"Sarcasm?"

She laughed then looked serious just a second later.

"Don't go Sheldon. Please"
"I have to. Just like you can't break your commitment, I can't break mine. I'll see you on the other side"
"I knew you loved that movie" she said, remembering the times she had with him. Times who seemed so far away now. She brushed his hand softly and finally let him go. Leonard smiled at her and left. Sheldon glanced one more time at her.

"Live long and prosper"

With that he was gone, leaving Penny with a hole in her heart. She felt the tears coming into her eyes but this time she let it all out. Her Spock was gone. Who knew that the annoying guy across the hall was such a sweetheart after all? That he'd be interferring in her life so much? She got back into her apartment and put her keys into the bowl. Even that reminded her of Sheldon. Two weeks, she thought, two weeks. She'll be fine. Her feelings for Sheldon were nothing. Marc was the man for her. Then she saw a paper on the floor. She picked it up and opened ot. She regognized the handwriting of Sheldon. She took a deep breath and started to read.

"Penny,
I'm sorry to leave you in stress but rest assure that I'm not forgetting you. I don't know how to express my feelings and my mom always told me to consign them in a notebook. I hope this will light you up better. If I tell you I love you, you'll start reconsidering yours and maybe your marriage itself. So I'm leaving. I wish you the best life you could imagine, even though I will not be a part of it. Maybe the time will come around. You changed my entire vision of the universe Penny Moon. I thought string theory was difficult and my equations almost impossible to resolve but you made it clearer. I will always be grateful for that. I realise I come a little out of character as to speak but then again, you're the Uhura to my Spock. Happy wedding, my best to Marc.
            Sheldon Cooper."

It will be a while for Penny to recover from all that. Something big was about to come.
