She was back. She couldn’t breathe. Sheldon didn’t come back with her. She had told him how sorry she was, how terrible she felt but he had insisted. She was sobbing, incontrollable tears and she screamed. Someone knocked at her door. She yelled ‘come in’ before crouching in her couch, her suitcase still on the floor. It was Leonard.
‘Penny, I thought I heard you. Are you okay?’
He noticed her tears and nodded. He sat next to her, putting a comforting arm on her shoulder. She was grateful but felt a great emptiness in her heart. She liked Leonard but he wasn’t Sheldon. Thinking his name was hurting so much.
‘Marc’s still here’ he informed her calmly, ‘he was worried. Have you seen Sheldon?’
She burst into tears and nodded vigorously.
‘I’m such an idiot!’ she blurted, wiping her face, ‘I should have…how could I? Leonard, what should I do?’
‘I don’t know Penny, what did you do?’
She couldn’t tell him what she did.
‘I gotta see Marc’ she eventually said, ‘you know…to make things rights’
‘Sure’
She smiled weakly at him and marched across the hall. Marc was standing there, talking awkwardly to Howard explaining his tricks to women and how he got Bernadette.
‘Hi’ Penny said slowly, waving her hands. Marc turned quickly at her, his face relieved. He went to hug her and a wave a guilt invaded her body. Only because she missed his touch, his breath on her neck, the taste of his lips. Then she got an epiphany. She tried to hide the smile coming onto her face.
‘Penny, I need to go back to New York. Will you be okay?’
‘Yes’ she said calmly, solemn, ‘say hello to your parents for me. And tell them I’m sorry’
‘Oh they don’t know. I don’t even know what you did but I’m glad to have you back’
‘No, no you don’t get it’ Penny corrected, trying to stay still, ‘I’m not going to New York. I can’t, I’m sorry’
Marc looked confused. Raj made a weird noise and Howard whispered something in his ear. They both nodded and smiled at Penny. Leonard was calling Stephanie.
‘But I thought you agreed. You talked about Broadway, how you always dreamed to go there! What’s gotten into you?’
‘I still want to go. This is a dream. But it’s not about you. I mean, I was happy with you. I still think you’re a great guy and I’m sorry to do that because I care about you. I’m so complex. I know what I want now’
‘Sweetie, are you telling me that you want to call the wedding off?’
He was widening his brown eyes and she sighed. She didn’t even feel bad. She was not being a bitch. It was time for her to be true to herself. How could she marry him after what she did? She couldn’t picture her life without the only one that mattered: Sheldon. It was not too late.
‘This is not something I’m happy about. But if I marry you, I wouldn’t be honest and I’ll make you miserable and bitter. Please don’t hold that against me’
He locked eyes with her but she felt nothing. Nope, brown was definitely not working for her.
‘What happened Penny?’ he asked, his voice cracking.
‘I planned nothing. I cleared my mind. I found my passion’
‘It smells dirt’ Howard interrupted, leaning over his chair.
She cast him a defiant glare but she was not mad. Raj frowned and Leonard gave her the thumbs up. She wanted to hug him. Later Penelope, she thought, you need to finish what you started.
‘What’s your passion?’
‘Blue’ she simply replied, enigmatic.
‘Blue?’ he repeated skeptically.
‘I want a nut case. Marc, you’re good, you deserve so much better. You’re funny, handsome, smart and simple. It’s not working for me. I want complicated in my life. I need someone who challenges me. And it’s not you. You’ll soon find someone, I’m sure of it’
He sighed and sniffed. She smiled at him weakly and he nodded.
‘If that’s what you want’ he finally said.
He kissed her one more time, waved at the guys and left the apartment. It’s like she had been carrying the world on her shoulders and someone took charge instead of her. She sighed loudly, relieved, and shouted her joy. The three guys cheered and high-five. She hugged Leonard tightly, thanking him for being so supportive.
‘I need to make a phone call’ she said, returning to her place. She had packed her stuff but she knew she could unpack now. Or maybe not. She picked her phone and dialed Sheldon’s number, exited for the first time in years.
‘Sheldon Cooper’ he said, sounding tired.
She smiled softly.
‘It’s Penny’
‘Oh, hello Penny. I see you’re home safe. Thank you for your call, have a good day’
‘Sheldon, wait! This is important!’
She was half jumping. She needed to calm down but hearing Sheldon felt so good she didn’t care how she looked.
‘Marc just left’
‘Oh. Well, thank you for warning me’. Was she dreaming or was that sarcasm? She could picture him smirking. She laughed.
‘Why are you laughing?’
‘Because I’m happy! Sheldon, I broke up with him!’
There was silence at the other end of the line.
‘You canceled the wedding? Penny, are you serious?’
For the first time ever, he lacked fancy vocabulary. He sounded as exited as she was.
‘Do you see why this is important now?’
‘I think I’m starting to’
‘I love you Sheldon Lee Cooper, come back to me!’
‘You return my feelings?’
‘Sure, whatever you call that. I can’t believe it! I’m in love with Dr Whack-a-doodle! Holy crap on a cracker!’
Sheldon rolled his eyes and she guessed it. She smiled again.
‘Come home Sheldon’ she whispered, like if someone else was in the room.
‘Whenever you are Penny, it will be my home’ he said softly, a tone she had never heard before. Her heart melt. She had tears in her eyes but this time it was because of happiness. She had never heard something more romantic.
‘I will try to have a plane or a train. You know I’m not really comfortable with the sky system. I’d rather take the train. I may be back in two days, tops’
‘Fine. As long as you come back. Sheldon?’
‘Yes Penny?’
‘Can you say you love me?’
Sheldon took a deep breath.
‘It won’t count as much on the phone. I need to see you in person to express my feelings towards you’
‘Please Sheldon, I called off my wedding because of you. I deserve a little something!’
She knew he would do everything to please her.
‘Penny Moon, I love you’
‘Oh my God…I knew but it’s so nice to hear it! I love you so much Sheldon. There’s so much I wanna tell you…I’ll just have to wait I guess’
‘I need to make reservations. I’ll call you on the plane. Or the train’
His voice enlighted as he said ‘train’. she smiled, feeling loved, safe and special. She had made Sheldon Cooper to love her. After all these years, she realized he’s been the one. He was the one she was looking for her life. She couldn’t wait for him to come back.
