I have to design three electives for the sixth grade.  Each elective will run ten weeks and meet daily for 50 minutes.  That's a lot to create lesson plans for!

There is a fourth elective that I'll have to teach:  AVID (http://www.avidonline.org/.)    Basically, it entails coaching students ( Read more... )

Gardening/movies as narratives
Miyazaki has a lot of environmental issues in his movies. There is also the possibility of editing together parts of "Being There" since other parts are unsuitable for kids.

In 6th grade (or maybe 5th) the current event topic that I was interested in was the right to die as the Gary Gilmore death penalty case was being argued at the Supreme Court, as well as the case for pulling the plug on Karen Ann Quinlan. What is in the current Supreme Court docket for the fall?

If you choose logic, consider using Lewis Carroll as one of your source materials. In "The Annotated Alice" Martin Gardner quite nicely discusses the logic games that Carroll plays within the text.

I use Martin Gardener's puzzles all the time!

In Feb/March I usually start a research project that is related to current events. Usually I design it in such a way that it is relevant to 6th grade standards in Sci or Soc Stu. Checking out the Supreme Court docket is a brilliant suggestion. Thanks!

as we discussed this last night, i was wondering what you were going to do for the last 10 weeks.

do you get to pick when you teach what? i'd suggest starting with avid, so that you can reinforce the best practices throughout your other electives...

I can't do Avid until I've done the training, which will be at the end of Sept. I can therefore do AVID as my second elective.

What's really neat about the electives is that I can teach anything I want. I asked about adhering to grade level standards and the principal said, "Think out of the box!" So I will!

I am going to have fun this year. Mmmmmhhmmm!
