Just had a conversation at work that reminds me of the continuing need to educate people about the rights of women. Please, no groans about feminists, this stuff is serious

That's the problem I have with the posters, leaflets that promote safety (especially on campus etc) encouraging girls to stick to lighted paths and other such things. It's well meaning, but the inference is, of course, that if you walk in the dark then you are almost inviting a rape/mugging.
Um no. I'd be interested in looking at the statistics of such crime and what time of day, and what place it was committed.
Anyone should be able to walk anywhere and if anything happens then it is only the fault of the attacker.
yes. think about a mugging case, for example. If a guy was attacked in a park and was injured, you wouldn't hear the 'well he shouldn't have been walking through the park by himself, now should he' arguments. It would be about the fact that someone committed a violent crime against him.
I still think there's nowhere near enough debate about the fact that it is unacceptable in ALL circumstances. The law says that even if a girl went to a party all by herself with a bunch of drunk footy players, dressed in clothing that showed a lot of skin, and was flirtatious, she has not contributed to being raped. It is not her responsibility to prevent men from raping her. It is theirs. But it seems that not everyone has caught up yet.

but women are weak defenseless animals that need constant supervision by strong tough men, didn't you know? ;)
If you were having this conversation in some pub in the back of Dandenong, then I would've said "well that's just typical ignorant bogan-talk for you" -- i would've also said "what the fuck are you doing in a pub in the Dande'", but that's another story.
the fact that you are having this conversation with people who are legal representatives, is just fucking scary.
even suggesting that someone, simply by what they are wearing, deserves or is asking to be raped is so just ignorant it's scary. Saying "oh god, look at her, she dresses like a slut" is one thing, but suggesting they deserve to be raped is another thing altogether.
that would be like me walking down the road in a tshirt that has little targets showing where my vital organs are, and having people say "OMG! LOOK AT THE WAY THAT GUY DRESSES! HE DESERVES TO BE SHOT REPEATEDLY IN THE CHEST!"
