Hitting the dance wall

Jun 19, 2009 14:22

Recently, I've felt like I've hit a plateau in my dancing. I don't feel like I'm getting better just social dancing or really learning very much. I can't afford the in depth lessons being taught and really, much of my dancing is self taught and adapted from the hordes of beginner and intermediate classes I've taken. It's hard to find advanced ( Read more... )

I recommend auditioning for Decadance. They're one group that pushes the limits of social dance, taking inspiration from the disparate backgrounds of all of their team members.

Beyond that, do you know Anna Botelho? She could probably hook you up with folks in the competitive dance crowd. They're always looking for leads.

I only vaguely know Anna. I've danced with her once or twice. I know quite a few people in the competitive circuit from my old days at UC Berkeley, but haven't heard of anyone out looking for a lead yet.

Now that I have a car, I'd love to go try out for Decadance. Do you know when they're recruiting?

I know they usually have fall auditions. Just ping them via their contact page.

I would totally do competition, I'm in the bay, but I don't know if my ballroom dancing skills are as up to par as you might want.

well, since my ballroom dancing skills aren't as up to par as I might want, that's not so much of a problem.

I can definitely sympathize. I felt that way for the longest time about ballroom (how many cross step waltz variations need to be taught?!), so I've taken a break and moved onto blues. The main unfortunate thing about that scene, however, is the fact that there's so many classes & workshops catered to the beginners that there's an incredible amount of intermediate dancers and beginners but, for the most part, the advanced dancers haven't been coming out.

I'm still excited about doing the lead swap, btw. I think you'll really like Kim!

If you're interested, a intermediate-advanced blues workshop is happening next Saturday (the 27th). It's only $45 for 5 hours of instruction and includes a live music night (with the woman who also happens to be teaching the workshop) with a late-night blues house party. Will shoot you the facebook invite for more info.

thanks, my other problem has been that since i have almost no income, i can't afford to pay for classes anywhere.

the waltz scene has the same problem as the blues scene. lots of beginner/intermediate classes and nothing beyond it. the cross step thing is just because cross step is richard's baby, so of course he's constantly promoting it and teaching it.

so when are we going to do this lead swap?
