PREFERENCE
~pre-series, PG, more-or-less shipless, one gratuitous lit reference
Sam Winchester will charge a burning building to pull civilians out,
But he prefers a plan.
Dean prefers a shotgun, a hot girl, a bed,
His brother, a sweet ride, dollar-store lighters and salt.
John prefers they do what he say:
On hunts, in diners, in life, unquestioningly.
Bartleby prefers not to, but only Sam gets the reference.
John Winchester prefers to drink until he can’t remember Mary,
To have some peace without worrying for his sons.
Sam prefers instructions that don’t end in ultimatum.
He prefers solidarity, logic, respect, listening, normalcy, sobriety.
He’d prefer a little respect, sir, if it’s not too much to ask.
John’d prefer he’d get his head out of his ass before it gets them all killed.
And Sam will do what he says or he’ll be sorry, dammit.
Dean Winchester prefers cheeseburgers, cherry pie and long highways with the windows open.
He prefers the silence of a good meal to the silence after the storm.
The silence before. The chaos during.
The Winchesters prefer, preferred, have preferences, wants, needs,
But in many cases
They’ve learned to live without.

This poem in no way, shape or form supports
Bartleby, the Scrivener, a novella by Herman Melville. But, linkage is provided so you can get the reference, too. Though I completely understand if you prefer not to. :P
