I can't tell you how many times in Japan I've been to a restaurant and they just ask me, "Are you going to eat it?" I mean, in Japanese, without even saying "here" or anything.

Guy was probably just stuck in the habit of saying it all the time. I would still tell customers to have a nice day at midnight.
