I don't even think of it in these terms. If we're talking about killing in the line of duty as part of military duties, my questions are:

1. Is this a case where deadly force is appropriate?
2. Do I have options other than deadly force which will suffice?

If the answer to 1 is yes and 2 is no, then I'd shoot. It doesn't matter whether the person in my sights is friend or enemy.

If, on the other hand, we're discussing a situation where I'm acting outside of a military context, my questions will begin with the two above and will also include:

3. Is there anyone else who can deal with this and who possesses lawful authority to do so?

If there is not, and if immediate action is required, I'll do what I feel I have to and hope a jury agrees with my reasoning.

To what degree is the life of a friend worth more than the life of a stranger?

None at all. Each has a mother, a father, a family, and other loved ones. The death of either would be a tragedy.

It's true that in the friend's case I'd have personal knowledge of the details of the tragedy, but that doesn't make it a greater tragedy.

It just goes to show that no question is black & white. In fact, very few questions are even shades of gray; most are 32-bit color. ;)

Oh my god, Jack Thompson was right! Video games do turn regular people into bloodthirsty killers, killing strangers and dear friends alike!

RUN! RUN!!!
