Stephen King has away of making the normal social structure break down very quick when the normal order is distrubed.

Yeah -- I thought it happened way too quickly in that book, though. Seven days to go from typical smalltown "evils" to full-on apocalypse? Too fast. The Sheeple would still be waiting for the rescuers to blast through and save them after just one week. Many of them would still be waiting for rescue, in fact, as they all died of starvation. Sitting tight and waiting for outside aid to solve all one's problems is the way an awful lot of folks deal with societal breakdowns, large and small, and no amount of normal-order-disturbing will break them out of that mindset.

well I have not finished the book yet, but I think you would be surprises on how firs things can go down hill, however a good story needs a good evile to fight against.
