If one assumes a) God exists and b) God is benevolently disposed toward human beings (again, per Jeremiah 29:11 and others) then He had no choice but to give us free will

If there is no free will then we are just puppets. Whats worse, if there is no free will then John Calvin is right- and if he is right then God is not benevolently disposed toward humans at all. How could He be, if He is willing to create untold numbers of people just to condemn them to Hell forever? Not even the old Greek and Roman gods were that cruel.
