Speaking of the History of Astronomy (hey, you started it with the caps) I was wondering if you've read the book "The Perfect Machine" by Ronald Florence. It's about the creation of the 200" Hale Telescope, plus some material on its predecessors and successors. I greatly enjoyed the book and found it full of interesting material.
We were on a tour of Crater Lake and the young ranger leading the group kept referring to a "sucky disk" used to determine water clarity, invented by some priest. I figured it out before we got back to shore...Angelo Secchi...a Secchi disk!
