i really need to look into my potential spouse's family history before procreating. i am watching TLC again and this one is about progeria. every time i watch TLC (aside from jon and kate), it's something about genetic disorders, obesity, or some randomly occuring phenomena. i'm getting paranoid that i'm carrying some recessive defective gene ( Read more... )

Mmph. The no arms, or little arms thing is actually caused for the most part by a drug given to pregnant women in the 60's or so that caused defects in the fetus. That's why most people with arms like that are within a certain age range. Mostly. Still happens.

Also, oddly enough, the condition is called Amelia. How's that for an unfortunate name? What gets me is that the dangers of birth defects and many conditions increases the older the mother is and an "old" mother is consider a woman over thirty. Yikes!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who worries about stuff like this. If I ever did get pregnant, I would probably be a ball of nerves for the whole 9 months. I got really freaked as a teenager watching Maury Povitch. This woman had a baby who had primordial dwarfism, and she said she had seen some special on tv about the condition when she was pregnant and just *knew* her baby would be born this way.
